Ann K. Mulcahy

Ann Kathleen (Gorman) Mulcahy is at rest.  She passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 20, 2014, warmed and comforted by the love of her devoted family.  She was 79. Hers was a life lived with Love.

Ann was born in Hingham, MA on May 15, 1934, the daughter of Francis “Frank” V. Gorman and Helen Marie (Bowen) Gorman. The family moved to Weymouth in 1951.  Her father owned the West Elm Variety Store in Wollaston, where  Ann and her sisters worked after school during the later years of the Great Depression and through World War II.  She was a proud graduate of North Quincy High School, Class of ’52, where she was a drum majorette.  She was still demonstrating high kicks on her 60th birthday!

Enormously compassionate, Ann provided loving care to many elderly family members.  She always reached out to those in need, especially those who could not help themselves, or who had been abandoned by others.  In the 1960’s she spent many hours volunteering at Gaches Village, an institution for the care and rehabilitation of abandoned children with special needs outside of Manila in the Philippines.  She also volunteered at Saint Clare’s halfway house on Cape Cod during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s helping women in early release programs return to productive lives.

Ann worked at Massa Lab in Hingham in the early 50’s, but it was her work as a pre-school teacher in Ivory Coast, Africa in the early 80’s that she was most proud of.  She also worked at the Hecht Company in Fairfax, VA in the mid 80’s, and as an administrative assistant at Corpus Christi Parish in Sandwich, MA in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

In addition to Hingham and Weymouth, Ann lived in Rockland, MA; Makati, Philippines; Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Vienna, VA; Sandwich, West Yarmouth, Centerville, and Mashpee MA.

Ann leaves behind the following loving family: 6 children: Kathleen Ann Smith (Danny ) of Fredericksburg, VA; William F. Mulcahy (Andrea Morris) of Littleton, MA; Mary Ann Hurtubise of Mashpee, MA; Elizabeth Ann Herndon of Hubert, NC; John M. Mulcahy (Shannon Veradt) of West Yarmouth, MA; Rose Ann Stimson (Patrick) of Marstons Mills, MA; 8 grandchildren: Theresa and Andrew (Crystal) Smith of VA; Jessica Ann and Matthew (Dave LaBranch) Hurtubise of NH; Ryan (Samantha), Justin and Becca Ann Herndon of NC; Ceara Angelone of MA & NH; 7 great-grandchildren: Aidan, Caroline, and Alyssa Ann Smith of VA; Jevin and Jay Herndon, Hunter Harp, and Trinity Ann Sams (August 2014), all of NC; and 2 surviving siblings, Virginia F. Normandin of Weymouth MA, and Edward V. Gorman (Mary) of Gilford NH.

Ann lived with, and was lovingly cared for, by her son John M. Mulcahy from 2003 – 2009, and her daughter Mary Ann Hurtubise from 2009 – 2013, to whom their sisters and brother are very grateful.

The family also thanks the staff of Kindred – Eagle Pond Nursing Home in West Dennis, MA, for the wonderful care given to Ann during her stay there.
