Walter O. Marquis

Marquis, Walter O., of S. Weymouth, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at South Shore Hospital on July 29, 2014.

Born August 4, 1923, he is predeceased by his parents Edward and Ida Marquis and older siblings Wilfred, Roland, Irene, Ida and Edmond Marquis. He was born in Lowell, then later moved to Brighton where he became a standout baseball and football player as well as the class president at St. Columbkille High School, class of 1941. Walter proudly served his country in the Army as a combat infantry soldier in Europe during WWII where he earned numerous awards, most notably the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He went on to work for 36 years at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, beginning as an inspector, then later as a supervising hearings officer at the Quincy and Plymouth branches.  He was a longtime communicant and head usher of St. Francis Xavier Parish in S. Weymouth as well as an active member and past Grand Knight of the St. Francis Knights of Columbus council 5027.  He was a member and past president of the Holy Name Society and a member of the Purple Heart Society.  Walter’s favorite pastimes were golf, bowling, swimming in his pool and above all traveling and spending time with his beloved wife of 62 years Mary Lou (Perry) and son David.

In addition to his wife, Walter leaves behind 5 sons, Walter Marquis of Hollis NH, Paul and his wife Mona Marquis of Easton, David Marquis of S. Weymouth, James and his wife Kristine Marquis of Plymouth, and Peter and his wife Kathryn Marquis of Atlanta, GA, along with 9 grandchildren. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Commonwealth Oncology, in particular to Dr. Thomas O’Connor, for their support and compassion over the last 3 years.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 8:30 AM on Saturday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Albert the Great Church, Weymouth at 9:30 AM. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
