Alessandro Campea
Alessandro Campea, 72, of Abington, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a brief illness and a long, courageous battle with frontotemporal dementia.
Alessandro was born on June 14, 1954, in Corfino, Italy, to the late Francesco Paolo Campea and Vera Campea. At the age of three, he immigrated to Boston with his family, where they established deep roots and built a life grounded in hard work, faith, family, and community.
A graduate of Malden High School, Alex continued his education at Boston State College, where he played on the 1975 Hall of Fame football team and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1978. He later earned a Master’s degree in counseling from Bridgewater State University in 1990.
For more than four decades, Alex devoted his life to education, coaching, and mentoring young people. He spent much of his career at Catholic Memorial School, serving as a teacher, guidance counselor, coach, and Athletic Director. As Athletic Director, he instituted several new sports programs both at the lower school and high school levels.
As a coach, he led Catholic Memorial's baseball program, earning more than 200 victories and guiding his teams to ten MIAA Tournament appearances and three Catholic Conference Championships. His dedication to the game and to his players earned him induction into the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014.
In addition to baseball, Alessandro had a lifelong love of football. He served as head football coach at Catholic Memorial for many seasons and coached at numerous levels throughout Massachusetts, including Christopher Columbus High School, Umass Boston, Bridgewater State University, and Oliver Ames High School. His influence extended far beyond wins and losses. Generations of athletes benefited from his leadership, guidance, and unwavering belief in their potential.
Though coaching and mentoring consumed much of his time, Alex cherished every opportunity to be with those he loved. He was a man that loved his family and their many great traditions. He treasured the time he spent with his close-knit family. He also enjoyed golfing with his wife, Christy, and his family and friends. Nothing brought him greater pride than watching his children build successful and meaningful lives of their own. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach, mentor, and friend whose impact will continue to be felt by all.
Alessandro is survived by his beloved wife, Christy Campea; his daughter, Vanessa Mackie and husband John Mackie; his son, Marc Campea and wife Tricia Campea; his grandchildren, Thea and Gianna Mackie; his brother, Pelino Campea and wife Theresa Campea; his sister-in-law, Concetta Campea; his brother in-law, Paul Griffin; his brother-in-law, Joseph Oliveira; his sister-in-law, Suzanne Keane and husband Dennis Keane; his niece, Dina Coffey; his nephew, Frank Campea and wife Jennifer Campea; his nephew, Gregg Gerbutavich; his niece, Kristen Haws and husband Michael Haws; his niece, Michelle Sheehan; his nephew, Joshua Oliveira; his niece, Paige Oliveira; his godson, Cameron Keane; many great nieces and nephews; and many loving relatives, friends, former students, and athletes.
