Alice Patricia “Pat” (Foley) Granahan, a lifelong advocate, educator, and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully after 98 years of a rich and purposeful life.

Born on February 7, 1928, Pat was the daughter of the late John B. Foley. Her mother, Frances Julia Foley died in childbirth of her dear sister Frances. Pat was raised in love and care by her father John and her foster mother, Rose O'Doherty of Ireland. Pat was predeceased by her beloved son, Leon Michael Granahan, and her sister, Frances Foley Hassett. Pat grew up in Newton and lived in Hingham most of her life.

Above all her accomplishments, Pat’s greatest joy was her family. She was the loving mother of seven children: Mark Granahan of Connecticut, Anne Martin and her husband Gerry of Hingham, Terrance Granahan and his wife Stephanie of Hingham, Eileen Granahan of Hanover, NH, Leon M. Granahan (deceased) and his wife Barbara Granahan of Hingham, Kathleen Granahan of Hingham, and Julie Heger and her husband Todd of Hingham. She was married to Leon E. Granahan for over 40 years.

She was the proud and adoring grandmother to Pamela (Martin) Landry of Uxbridge, Janice (Martin) Phillips of North Andover, Colleen Granahan of Sandisfield, Patrick Granahan of New York City, Daniel Granahan of Spain, and Scout Heger of Hingham—whose name was lovingly inspired by Pat’s favorite phrase, "She’s a good Scout." She was also the cherished great-grandmother of Abigail, Alex, Andrew, Benjamin and Wyatt.

Pat was a woman of fierce intellect and quiet determination. A lifelong learner, she graduated from Regis College in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. Driven by a natural curiosity, she earned her teaching certification, studied Spanish, and immersed herself in Energy Development and Public Policy. In the early 1950s, Pat took great pride in her work as a laboratory research technician at Boston City Hospital, and she later served as a dedicated teacher’s aide in both the Hingham and Scituate Public Schools throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Pat volunteered at Hospice of the South Shore for four years and spent more than 20 years supporting Holly Hill Farm.

A devoted Hingham resident, Pat was deeply committed to her community and never shied away from standing up for what she believed in. In 1983, she was the first woman elected commissioner to the Hingham Municipal Light Board. Passionate about clean energy, she founded Responsible Energy Alternatives of Hingham (REACH) to advocate against nuclear power and continued that work in wind energy. Over the years, she lent her vision to numerous civic and educational efforts, sitting on the Board of Directors for the Country Academy Day School and earning the prestigious Leadership in the Community Award from the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Pat’s activist spirit remained vibrant well into her final years. Most recently, she inspired her community by co-founding the weekly "Stand Up Speak Out" rallies in Hingham—a movement that has gathered the community for 86 consecutive weeks and continues today as part of her enduring legacy.

Pat led her life by loving example and treasured each and every one of her many friends who were incredibly important in her life. Over 98 years that is too many special people to name.

To know Alice Patricia was to love her. Over the last several weeks, she continued to impart her wisdom, focusing on the message: "Look at the good in everybody and leave the rest behind".

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Wednesday 9/30/2026 from 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. Interment will be Thursday 10/1/2026 at 11 AM at St.s Joseph Cemetery, 990 LaGrange Street, West Roxbury, MA 02132.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Pat’s memory may be directed to Holly Hill Farm in Cohasset, The Barbara and Pat Roche Hospice Home (through the Croi Health Charitable Fund) in Hingham or the Hingham Public Library.
