Mr. Alphonsus Ledwell of Weymouth, passed away in his home on September 20, 2025. He was 91.
Alphonsus, also known as Phonse or Paul, was born in South Boston and grew up in Dorchester. He graduated from the Boston Technical High School. His family later moved to Weymouth, where he met his wife of 66 years, Johanna, and where the two ultimately raised their 8 children.
Beginning in the 1950s, Phonse worked as a commercial fisherman based out of the historic Boston Fish Pier on ships that fished for cod off of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and other parts of the Atlantic. When the fishing industry declined, Phonse transitioned to a career as a Union pile driver in Local 56 of the New England Chapter of the Carpenter's Union. He was proud to have worked on many of Boston's major construction projects including, the Big Dig, the Deer Island project, and the John Joseph Mosley Federal Courthouse. In his spare time Phonse enjoyed building model ships, genealogical research, home improvement projects, and discussing politics. He was a natural story teller, often joking that he "remembered things that never even happened."
Alphonsus is survived by his beloved wife, Johanna T. (Wiencko) Ledwell of Weymouth and their children: Donna Adukonis and her husband of Martin of Abington, Paul Ledwell and his wife, Debra, of Middleboro, Ronald Ledwell and his wife, Elizabeth, of Pembroke, Thomas Ledwell and his wife, Mary, of Hanson, Catherine Lyons and her husband, David, of Billerica, Mary Weidenbach and her husband, Joseph, of Sudbury, Robert Ledwell and his wife, Deborah, of Weymouth, and Garrett Ledwell of Weymouth. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, his sisters Mary Durante and her husband, Ernest, of Weymouth and Leona Simonelli of Wellesley, as well as many nieces and nephews.
