Mrs. Ann “Anna” (Tangherlini) Barnes, of Weymouth, Ma passed away suddenly on December 4, 2023, in Naples, Fl. She was three days shy of her 91st birthday.
Beloved wife of the late Martin E. Barnes, Jr.
Loving mother of Martin E. Barnes, III and his wife, Lynne, of Weymouth, John R. Barnes of Hull, Lauren Barnes-Porter and her husband, David of Scituate, Joanne Tanguy and her husband, Brian of Weymouth, and Andrea Patti and her husband, Nick of Staten Island, NY.
Sister of Eleanor Pompeo of Weymouth, the late Marie “Sweetie” Long, and the late John Tangherlini.
Longtime Friend of Joseph Silva of Marco Island, FL
Also survived by 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Anna was raised in Quincy, MA. She was the eldest of four and a graduate of Quincy High School. She met her husband Marty, then a young marine, while he was stationed in Hingham before he went to serve in the Korean War. When he returned, they married and settled in Weymouth, where they raised their 5 children.
Anna was a devout Catholic and actively involved at St Jerome Parish, where she sang in the church choir for many years. She worked for the Town of Weymouth in the public works department. Later, she became an administrative assistant for the United States Postal Inspectors Service at their headquarters in Boston. While there she received many accolades and awards for her performance. She made many friends along the way both personally and professionally.
Upon retirement, Anna and Marty became snowbirds and loved their condo life in Marco Island, FL. She stayed active, becoming the social director of her condo association and the media liaison for the Italian American Club. They savored the sunshine, walks on the beach, and sunset cocktails with many friends and family.
Anna was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her life was full of love, laughter, music, and dance. She loved to cook, gather family, golf, and play bocce.
Her life was full and beautiful. Her strength, spirit, generosity, and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during visiting on Wednesday, December 13th, from 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street (offRoute 3A – Bicknell Square).
The Funeral Mass will be at St. Jerome Church, Weymouth, on Thursday, December 14th at 10:30 AM.
Burial will follow in Old North Cemetery, Weymouth.
Donations may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
