Listen to Obituary

Ann M. Barrett, age 89, of Weymouth, died peacefully on April 18, 2026, at the Dr. Ruth McLain Hospice Home in Braintree, surrounded by her loving family.

Ann’s life was shaped by many people, especially her family and the many friends and supporters she surrounded herself with. Since her marriage to Bob in 1960, the couple was at the center of what they proudly modeled as “a circle of strength and love.” Over the years, their family would grow to include four children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ann was born on August 26, 1936, in Charlestown to Francis and Mary (Ryan) Murphy. She remained a proud “Townie” throughout her life. Ann maintained her connection to the city after marrying Bob, also a Townie, and moving to Weymouth in 1966 to raise their family at their home on Second Street. She embraced parenting, maintaining the household and all that came with raising four kids. As a family, the Barretts enjoyed summer vacations at Lake Winnipesaukee and Hampton Beach, and later in North Conway, N.H., where they owned a home. In 2014, Ann and Bob moved to East Bay Condos in North Weymouth, where they quickly developed a circle of friends and supporters.

Soon after her home became an empty nest, Ann discovered Weymouth’s Whipple Senior Center, where staff and members embraced her and guided her to “friends, health and cheer.” She enjoyed Muscles in Motion, Coffee and Conversation, Bingo, Reiki and of course holiday-themed parties. But music and entertainment were her favorite events, singing and dancing to the Whipple Snappers, Olde Kids on the Block and the Ivil Brothers. She became a sort of Whipple Center greeter, always with her eye out for first-time visitors who needed the same warm welcome she received years ago. Her life and spirit were so enriched by the entire Whipple Center community that she actively recruited others to join her there...and they did.

Ann found the same sense of community at Allerton House Weymouth, where she moved in October 2025. She made fast friends with residents who had common interests and similar backgrounds, bonding as they shared stories over meals, music and activities…all while Allerton’s wellness staff attended to her needs and kept her looking her best.

As a lover of music, Ann looked to song to bring her joy and to connect with people. Catchy, meaningful lyrics were always on the tip of her tongue, and she would sing them to deliver messages of love, encouragement, thanks or just to start a conversation or share a laugh.

Ann enjoyed her role as “Nanny,” along with her sidekick “Pup,” in attending to their 10 grandchildren – babysitting, pickups and drop offs, supporting them at events and activities and through school, and later in life helping them establish careers and families. Her three great-grandchildren – Wesley and twins Madelyn and McKenna – were fortunate to receive her love, attention and song for about the past three and two years, respectively.

Ann’s final days were spent at the Dr. Ruth McLain Hospice Home in Braintree, where she rested comfortably, with her family at her side, under the care of a dedicated staff of nurses and aides.

Ann is predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years, Robert K. Barrett. She is survived by four children: Susan Wahlberg and her husband, Eugene, of Norwell; Mark Barrett and his wife, Diane, of Rowley; Robert Barrett and his wife, Monica, of Hanover; and Kevin Barrett and his wife, Dina, of Weymouth. Ann had 10 grandchildren: Krista Royea and her husband, Andrew, of Abington; Kevin Wahlberg and his wife, Sarah, of Boston; Andrew Wahlberg and Ryan Wahlberg, both of Weymouth; Erin Barrett, of Rowley; Colleen Barrett, of Newburyport; Brandon Barrett and Cameron Barrett, both of San Diego; and Lauren Barrett and Nicole Barrett, both of Boston. Ann also leaves a sister, Mary Murphy, of Dedham. She is predeceased by her brothers, Sonny, of Charlestown, and Thomas, of Walpole.

Ann and the Barrett family are thankful for the attention and support of staff members at the Whipple Center, South Shore Hospital (Emerson 5), Allerton House and the McLain Hospice Home, along with the doctors and other health care providers who supported and cared for Ann in her later years.

Donations in Ann’s memory may be made to Weymouth Elder Services, Whipple Center, 182 Green St., Weymouth, MA 02191.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Sunday 4/26/2026 from 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street (off Route 3A - Bicknell Square).

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:45 AM on Monday 4/27/2026 prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Jerome Church, Weymouth at 10:30 AM.
