Torsney Greene, Ann Sullivan of Quincy, passed away on November 16, 2014 at age 88.
Devoted mother of Kathleen T. Young of Boston and Richard Torsney of Humarock; Cherished grandmother of Elizabeth Marie Young of Watertown, Kathryn McCullough of Boston, Michael Russell of Humarock, Nicole Russell McCabe of Woburn, Gianna Pepe of Stoughton, and Emily and Joseph Torsney of Humarock. Devoted wife of the late Richard Torsney and late Joseph Greene.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, daughter of the late Christopher and Anne (McCarthy) Sullivan. Her mother died in childbirth and she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Esther and Hector Paden, who raised her as their own “Queenie” in America. As the daughter of a World War 1 hero who fought for America, she was born an American citizen on foreign soil. Accordingly, she always had a strong love of both her birth country, Ireland, and her adopted country, America.
Ann was a strong woman’s advocate, introducing the first flex time arrangement at Frank B. Hall and Company, where she worked as a bookkeeper for over 20 years. Her life was full of appreciation for the visual arts, music, history, and literature. She was an accomplished painter, poet and gardener and a lifelong volunteer in civic activities including the PTA, Cub Scouts, Quincy Historical Society and poll volunteer. She made friends at all stages of life from her high school days in the Ladies Club, which was active for over 55 years, to her final days with the wonderful caregivers at Hancock Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Her positive spirit and strong faith and courage remain as an example to us all.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Monday 4-8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:30 AM Tuesday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Ann’s Church, Quincy at 10:30 AM. At Ann’s request, her ashes will be scattered in a ceremony at sea at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made with note “In memory of Ann S. Greene” to Catholic Charities, 51 Sleeper Street, Boston, MA 02210.
