Antero Gomes of Quincy, Massachusetts, passed away on Sunday, February 8th, 2026. He was 100 years old.
He was born on January 11th, 1926, in Fogo, Cabo Verde, son of the late Jose Lobo Gomes and Amelia Vaz Mendes.
Antero had many roles while in Cabo Verde, however being an elementary school teacher was his favorite. Many remember Antero as a born educator and a dedicated community leader who consistently spread positive values and offered guidance both inside and outside the classroom. Whether in the local neighborhoods, churches, or his own home, Antero was known for his cheerful disposition and his tireless commitment to helping others from dawn to dusk.
He immigrated to the United States in 1991 where he worked at a fishery until he retired at the age of 75. In his free time, he enjoyed playing cards and Mancala, watching UFC fights, and reading anything he could get his hands on.
He is survived by his wife of 80 years, Maria DePina Gomes and his two daughters, Edilia Gomes (Javaid Butt) of Quincy and Dalila Gomes (Joseph Rapoza) of Northampton, his sister Maria Fidalga Montrond of Brockton , his five grandchildren: Isabel Altaf, Harris Altaf, Nicolas Gomes-Rapoza, Benjamin Gomes-Rapoza, and Lucas Gomes-Rapoza, as well as Ayesha Soares, whom he cherished as a granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family at the visiting hours on Wednesday, February 11th and Thursday, February 12th, from 4-7 PM at the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 40 Sea Street, NORTH Weymouth, MA. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the funeral home at 11 AM on Friday, February 13th. The family kindly requests that those in attendance do not take photos, video or live stream during the visiting hours or funeral and that if you’d like to send flowers, please refrain from sending lilies.
