Barbara Ann
Brown
June 14, 1933 – March 19, 2026
Barbara Ann (Powers) Brown, of Hanover, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, March 19, 2026. She was 92.
Barbara was born in Boston on June 14, 1933, and was the daughter of the late Edward J. and Agnes M. (Vallely) Powers.
Barbara was raised in Dorchester and Milton, where her story began and where many of her most cherished memories were made. She graduated from Girls High School in Dorchester, and from an early age, her independent spirit, quick wit, and unmistakable voice set her apart. As a teenager, she could often be found driving through Dorchester with friends, driving fast, and embracing the freedom of the open road.
On February 15, 1958, Barbara married the love of her life, Robert, at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Milton, beginning a lifelong journey centered around family, resilience, and devotion. Her home became her world, a place where the door was always open, where no one ever left hungry, and where you were guaranteed good conversation, honest opinions, and likely a laugh or two.
Barbara had a gift in the kitchen. She could whip up just about anything without hesitation, and cooking for her family was one of the many ways she showed her love. She was also deeply creative, finding joy in oil painting and surrounding herself with bright flowers and anything in her favorite color, red.
To know Barbara was to know her love for animals. She didn’t just care for them, she rescued them, nurtured them, and gave them a life they wouldn’t have had otherwise. From dogs and cats to geese and chickens, her home was always full of life. She had a special place in her heart for the forgotten ones, often taking in stray, elderly, or sick animals. Simply put, animals were lucky to have Barbara.
Barbara lived life in the present. Age was just a number to her, and she made sure to enjoy every moment. She loved watching her favorite soap operas like The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as classic films and shows like The Sopranos, Dexter, and Outlander. While music wasn’t her thing, she was a loyal listener of talk radio, especially WBZ, WRKO, and “The Reverend.”
She was never one to hold back. Barbara was honest, sometimes blunt, but always real. She had the gift of gab and could talk to anyone for hours, sharing stories, advice, and her many beauty and health tips. She was generous, always willing to help others, and deeply loyal to those she cared about. Her sense of humor was unforgettable.
Barbara was a devoted mother who showed up for everything her children did. Whether it was attending her son’s horse shows or trying new things alongside them, she was always present, always involved, and always supportive. She was a caretaker by nature, and a homebody who built her life around the people and animals she loved most.
Barbara showed her love through her actions, through meals cooked, doors opened, and unwavering support. In her later years, she experienced a beautiful transformation, becoming more expressive with her emotions. She found comfort in saying “I love you,” and in sharing hugs and kisses, which was something that meant so much to those closest to her.
Barbara believed in simple but powerful truths: family, fun, and being happy, because we only go around once.
She lived life to the fullest, without regrets, and always on her own terms. If you knew Barbara, you laughed with her, you learned from her, and she will be deeply missed by all the lives she touched.
Barbara was the beloved wife of Robert C. Brown, with whom she shared many loving years. She was the devoted mother of Stephen C. Brown and his wife Joan of Holbrook, Wendy A. Brown of Hanover, and Robyn Babino and her husband Stephen of East Bridgewater. Barbara was the loving grandmother of William French and his wife Alaina of Marshfield, Cheryl Conway and her partner James Green of Stoughton, Heather Nadeau and her husband Paul of East Bridgewater, Kristen Thibeault and her husband Thomas of East Bridgewater, Carli Brown of Holbrook, and Jenna Brown of Holbrook. She was the loving great grandmother of Brianna, Penelope, Lyllian, Amelia, Griffin, J.J., Nathan, Cameron, and Makenzie. Barbara was the dear sister of Edward W. Powers, and his late wife Jean of Florida. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visiting hours are private.
