Betty Lou McDermott, 68, passed away suddenly on July 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on May 29, 1958, in Wilmington, Ohio, Betty was the beloved daughter of the late Bundy and Gladys King. Though her roots began in Ohio, fate led her to Georgia, where she met the love of her life, Roy McDermott, while he was stationed there during his military service. Together they built a beautiful life, eventually settling in Weymouth, Massachusetts, where they raised five children and created a home filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.
For nearly 25 years, Betty was a familiar and friendly face as a customer service representative at the local Kmart. When the store closed, retirement didn't suit her for long. She soon found herself working a few shifts each week at Kohl's. We all liked to joke that the customers and coworkers simply couldn't get enough of her but secretly, we knew she just loved that employee discount.
When Betty wasn't shopping, she was happiest at home. She took enormous pride in her yard and could often be found tending her gardens, mowing the lawn, or making sure every flower bed looked just right. Her home reflected the love and care she poured into everything she did, it was always spotless, always "guest ready," and her beloved Dyson vacuum was never far away.
Betty never met a holiday she didn't decorate for. Whether it was Christmas, Halloween, Easter, or any celebration in between, every season brought out another opportunity to fill her home with decorations. Maybe it was because she loved making things festive or maybe it was just another excuse to go shopping.
After a busy day, nothing made Betty happier than relaxing by her pool or settling on the couch with a hot cup of tea, no matter the season. And of course, it had to have extra sugar.
Above all else, Betty's greatest joy was her family. Being "Nana" was the role she treasured most. Her grandchildren knew they could always find themselves by her side, helping in the garden, tagging along on shopping trips, cleaning the house, or even cleaning out the garage before one of her famous yard sales, where they proudly worked the registers.
If you knew Betty, you knew she loved to talk. Her cordless phone was practically an extension of her hand or tucked into her back pocket. She could brighten anyone's day with a phone call, catch up on the latest happenings, and maybe share a little neighborhood gossip along the way. Every voicemail ended the same way, words her family will forever hold close to their hearts:
"Call me... love you... bye."
Betty will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, proud Nana, loyal friend, and a true caregiver. She was funny, compassionate, hardworking, fiercely dedicated, wonderfully stubborn, and completely irreplaceable. She made ordinary moments feel special, welcomed everyone into her home, and showed her love through acts of service, thoughtful conversations, and unwavering support.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing that the lessons she taught us, the traditions she created, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in all who knew her.
Betty is survived by her beloved husband, Roy McDermott of Weymouth; her five children; Donald Kyne and his wife Darlene Kyne of Whitman, Kristie Cornell of Weymouth, Tina Kirby and her husband Paul Kirby of Holbrook, Melissa McDermott of Weymouth and her stepdaughter Daniele Eckel of Mainz, Germany. Cherished grandchildren; McKiley and Adriana Kyne of Whitman, Scot, Kayla and SueAnn Cornell of Weymouth, Kieran, Kaden and Kole Kirby of Holbrook, her siblings Melvin Joseph, Donald King, Shirley Hallett, Martha King and many nieces and nephews as well as many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bundy and Gladys King and siblings Joyce Brewer and Hazel Grappin.
