With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Carol Harries-Selland, on January 7 th with her family by her side.
Born in Boston, MA, on October 29, 1942, to Lawrence and Virginia Healy, Carol was a graduate of Fontbonne Academy Class of 1959 along with many of her lifelong friends; the Catherine Labouré School of Nursing on the campus of Carney Hospital in Dorchester; and later Emmanuel College. Carol was a dedicated Nurse Anesthetist who worked along with physicians to provide stellar care, hope and comfort to patients during their most difficult time. Carol was a leader of thought and a contributor in her medical profession both as a cardiac “OR” nurse at Boston’s Tufts New England Medical Center on the open-heart team and as a nurse anesthetist at the Carney Hospital and later Eye Health on the South Shore.
Growing up, Carol brought ‘joie de vivre’ to everything she did from ballet dancing and ice skating at the Skating Club of Boston, to summers of water skiing and spending time with her Nana and Grandpa Murphy in Brant Rock. Life was fun filled with friends and family. Carol’s adult life had the same ‘joie de vivre’ moments raising her children in Hingham. Both summer and winter seasons were filled with adventure at Hingham Yacht Club and skiing until the last chair with family at Glen Ellen, Mad River Glen and Waterville Valley. Many places held a special place in her heart spanning from Hingham to Paris, Maui, Martha’s Vineyard, the BVIs and especially Summit County, Colorado. Carol was ambitious, and an exceptional student at every level of study through her Master of Science of Nursing program required to become a Nurse Anesthetist. In truth, Carol was a fiercely independent leader and decision maker and would have preferred to go directly to medical school and become a Doctor. It’s worth remembering that the women of Mom’s era redefined the acceptance, participation level, inclusion and leadership roles of women and girls in professional, athletic and recreational pursuits. Unsurprisingly, Mom was always surrounded by exceptional women leaders, and as children we remember Carol ahead of the curve as an avid tennis player and runner with her friends at the Hingham Tennis Club, the Hingham Striders, and running in the early days of the Boston Women’s 10k, aka “The Bonnie Bell Mini Marathon.” Similarly, Carol proudly sailed as a member of an all-female crew in an era when this simply didn’t happen. Advancing women’s causes and acceptance in all aspects of society was central to Mom’s motivations, and she was proud to blaze her own trail while supporting friends with similar goals and dreams.
Carol was known as “Mimi” to her 4 grandchildren, Jack, Eva, Reid, and Megan, and she built many a sandcastle with them during the summers spent at Nantasket Beach. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed the annual viewing of the Hingham Fourth of July parade from her front lawn in Hingham Center.
Carol is survived by her children Rich and Cara, their spouses Cecilia and Scott, and grandchildren Jack and Eva Harries of Cohasset, MA, and Reid and Megan Plamondon of Redwood City, CA. She is also survived by her sisters Virginia Healy-Tangney of North Andover, MA, and Geraldine DeLuca and her husband Leonard DeLuca of New York, New York.
