Obituary

On any given Sunday morning, you could find Charlie Ross making his famous egg sandwiches, never quite knowing who might show up for breakfast. Family, friends, neighbors, and newcomers were always welcome. For a man who planned just about everything, Charlie always made room for one more.

Charles “Charlie” Ross, 79, a longtime resident of North Quincy who spent his final year in Hull, passed away on October 22, 2026, following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He faced his illness as he faced life: with grace, determination, humor, and an unwavering positive attitude.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Charlie was a gentleman in every sense of the word. Intelligent, kind, hardworking, fair, and unfailingly polite, he believed in doing what was right, treating everyone with respect, and keeping his word. His thoughtful, evenhanded advice was sought by many, whether on life’s important decisions or his latest prediction for the Patriots’ game.

At the center of Charlie’s world was Jennie, his beloved wife of 55 years and the love of his life. They met while working at SH Couch in 1970, married in May 1971, and became a team in every sense of the word. Together they raised four children in their North Quincy home, where they lived for 50 years, building a life rich in love, laughter, traditions, and lasting friendships. They loved traveling together, but some of their happiest moments were spent enjoying the life and family they had built.

Charlie particularly loved a good “gathering,” as he called it. There was always a reason to bring people together over a cocktail, one of Jennie’s delicious meals, or an impromptu visit. In the warmer months, he was often found on his beloved back deck, chatting with neighbors, tending his garden, and enjoying the company of friends. Some summers, he seemed to spend more time on the deck than inside the house. Wherever Charlie was, people gathered, and everyone felt welcome.

Born into a Navy family, Charlie spent much of his childhood living around the world, inspiring a lifelong curiosity about people and places. Known as “Pat” to many of his relatives, he went on to serve proudly in the United States Air Force. As a member of the U.S. Air Force Security Service, he contributed to a vital intelligence mission involving the collection and analysis of foreign military communications. His service took him to Okinawa and Istanbul, further deepening his appreciation for the world and its people.

A geography enthusiast, Charlie never met an atlas or an issue of National Geographic he didn’t like. Long before GPS, he could chart a route and tell you something interesting about almost anywhere. He was the family’s original GPS, in more ways than one.

Charlie spent his career in finance and accounting, including more than 20 years at State Street Bank before retiring in 2020. A firm believer in education and hard work, he earned his bachelor’s degree from UMass Boston while working full-time and raising his family, demonstrating the perseverance he encouraged in his children.

Affectionately known as “Plan Man,” Charlie approached family life with almost military precision. Shower schedules were carefully orchestrated, the oldest child always got the front seat, and dinner often featured impromptu quizzes on state capitals and major league sports teams. Elbows stayed off the table, baseball caps came off, and the salt and pepper traveled together, in the proper direction. His standards were high, but his manner was gentle, and his legendary dad jokes ensured that laughter was never far behind.

He loved his Boston sports teams, music, good conversation, and, above all, people. He had a gift for friendship and often reminded his children, “You have friends you just haven’t met yet.” It was a philosophy he lived every day, finding humor even in difficult moments and always looking for the good in others.

To his children, Charlie was their foundation: a steady presence, a moral compass, and a source of unconditional love. To his cherished granddaughters, he was Grandpa C. He taught by example that character matters, hard work is honorable, and kindness costs nothing. His favorite advice captured the philosophy by which he lived: “All you need is a positive attitude, and you can do anything.”

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Jennie; his four children, Beth Ross Twombly and her husband, David, of Hull; Timothy Ross and his fiancée, Amanda Pross, of North Quincy; Kevin Ross and his wife, Meagan, of Stratham, New Hampshire; and Brian Ross and his partner, Wesley Hyatt, of Charlestown; his cherished granddaughters, Lauren, Sara, and Scarlett Ross; and Amanda’s son, Jack. He also leaves his siblings, Charles William Ross II, Deanna Daniel, and Lon Dale Ross, along with many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Charles William and Pauline Edna (Hunnewell) Ross, and his siblings, Tanya Pearson, James William Ross, and Lorinda Icenogle.

Charlie’s legacy lives in the countless lives he touched and the extraordinary sense of belonging he created. His family will forever cherish his wisdom, his humor, his gentle strength, and the love he gave so generously. He showed them that the best things in life weren’t complicated: a good laugh, a helping hand, a positive attitude, and the simple joy of being together.

For a man who always had a plan and always knew the way, his greatest gift was helping the people he loved find theirs.
