Colonel Leo Joseph Weeks

Colonel Leo Joseph Weeks, soldier, diplomat, teacher and beloved husband and father died December 1, 2025 in the loving comfort of his wife Agnes and his children. He was born in Amity, Maine on September 16, 1937, the fifth child of Samuel and Phyllis (Farrar) Weeks.

He entered the United States Army in September 1957, starting as an enlisted soldier, and remained for nearly 33 years until his retirement in July 1990. During his years of Army service, he served three tours of duty in Germany, two tours in Vietnam during the war, and a tour in Korea after that war. During the last several years of his military career, he served as a military diplomat in ever-increasingly important assignments in the American Embassies in Bonn, Germany, Stockholm, Sweden, and finally, as the US Defense Attaché in Bern, Switzerland 1987-1990. During his military service, he completed his bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Nebraska and then went on to earn three Masters Degrees, as well as professional training and proficiency in the German, Swedish, and French languages. He received some 25 military decorations and awards, including the Legion of Merit, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, three Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart. In his heart-of-hearts, Leo Weeks remained an infantry soldier until his Lord called him home.

After his Army career, he became actively involved in the second professional love of his life - education - and served several years in high level education, to include positions as adjunct professor with Troy State University, Central Texas College, and City Colleges of Chicago in Europe and later as Executive Dean of City Colleges of Europe in the 1990s. Upon returning to the United States from the universities in Europe in 2001, he served for several more years as adjunct professor at the University of West Florida and as an instructor of strategy at the US Marine Corps Command & General College in Pensacola. He was also a volunteer instructor at the University of West Florida’s Center for Lifelong Learning in Fort Walton Beach, Florida during these years as well. He remained an active teacher until 2020.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gregory, Bryce, John and Samuel, sister Daphne and his first wife, Ilse Heissler-Weeks. He is survived by his wife Agnes, his son Michael of San Antonio, TX, daughter Claudia of Fallston, MD, stepson G. Frederick Shepard of Quincy, MA, stepdaughters Sarah Shepard of Quincy, MA, Jennifer Buckley and her husband Paul of Plymouth, MA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Chief Warrant Officer USA Richard Leo Weeks and wife Priscila of Cumberland Furnace, TN and Samantha Magnuson and her husband Josh of Kyle, TX, as well as great grandchildren Summer and Leo Weeks and Hazel Magnuson.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday 12/16/2025 from 9-10:30 AM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY followed by the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Quincy at 11 AM.
