Daniel J. Murphy, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and devoted family man, peacefully passed away on Friday, October 24, 2025, leaving behind a legacy filled with love and laughter. Born as one of six siblings, he embodied the values of family and dedication throughout his life. He was born in Newton, Massachusetts, to Joseph V. Murphy and Marie G. (McCarthy), later relocating to North Weymouth, Massachusetts.
Dan had always been fascinated by the sea, spending many childhood summers sailing. When he joined the Navy in 1959 it felt like a perfect fit. Dan proudly served in the Navy as a Radarman, demonstrating his commitment and honor in service to his country. His first naval vessel he was stationed on was the U.S.S. Charles R. Ware, and he fondly remembered his time on the USS Gainard.
After his military career, he worked diligently for the telephone company, where he met the love of his life, Marie (Elaine). They often joked that they “heard bells” when they met at the phone company and knew they were destined to marry. They wed in May 1970.
Daniel later became a respected supervisor for the United States Post Office in Boston, Massachusetts, for over 25 years, earning admiration from colleagues and friends alike.
Dan and his wife Elaine built a beautiful life in Quincy, Massachusetts, raising three children who became the center of his world. Family meant everything to him. In his later years, Dan embraced his role as a grandfather to five, with immense joy and affection, cherishing every moment with his grandchildren.
His passions encompassed fishing and spending time on the ocean, where he found his greatest peace. He relished sharing tales of striped bass and found immense joy in teaching children the art of fishing. Dan cherished his visits to the Quincy Kennedy Senior Center for card games and social gatherings. known for his sharp wit, he found joy in telling jokes that brought laughter to those around him. An avid reader and music enthusiast, he enriched his mind and soul through books and melodies.
Beloved husband of the late Marie E. Murphy. Loving father to Julie A. Norton and her husband, Michael of Quincy; Ann M. Ciaccio and her husband, Vincent Jr., of Weymouth; and Danielle E. Stenberg and her husband, Bruce Jr., of Weymouth. Adoring grandfather to Landry, Gavin, Madison, Mikey, and Olivia. Brother of Paula Fairbanks of Hull, Kathy Traina of FL, Charlie Murphy of Weymouth, and the late Joseph Murphy Jr. of Plymouth and Marilyn Gillis of
Weymouth. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
His unique humor and storytelling brilliance will be deeply missed but fondly cherished by everyone who knew him.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Wednesday 10/29/2025 from 4-6 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street (off Route 3A - Bicknell Square). A Funeral Service will be celebrated immediately following at 6 PM in McDonald Keohane Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Daniel may be made to the Kennedy Senior Center, 440 East Squantum Street, Quincy, MA 02171.
