Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Mattson, Donald W., of Hingham, formerly of Quincy, passed away on August 23, 2026, at the age of 86.

Born and raised in Quincy, Don was the son of the late Walter Mattson and Evelyn Hendrikson. Cherished husband of Marjorie Ellen Mattson of Hingham. Loving father of Maria Cronan and her husband Brian of South Carolina and John Mattson of Milton. Doting Papa to Kylie, Emma, and Finn and caring uncle to Kevin Chubbuck of New Hampshire. Don was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter Madeleine Cronan and sister Gloria Holbart.

A hard worker from an early age, Don was dependable, determined, generous, and above all, a devoted provider for his family. He spent many years with General Dynamics, working his way up to general manager through perseverance and skill. After retirement, Don stayed connected to his community by driving a school bus. He loved driving, school spirit, and being part of the community.

Don was a proud member of the Dorchester Yacht Club and Quincy Lodge of Elks, but his greatest joy was spending time on the water with his family. He loved sailing and boating and even built his own boat in his younger years. The water was a place of peace for Don, and Hull Gut held a special place in his heart. He treasured every opportunity to bring his grandchildren there, even if only for a quick visit to collect a few rocks.

Above all, Don was devoted to his wife, Marjorie, whom he loved more than anything. They met at Wollaston Beach and married on October 17, 1965, sharing nearly 64 years of love, companionship, and unwavering devotion. Marjorie remained the center of his world throughout their life together.

As a father and grandfather, Don was everyone’s biggest cheerleader. He cherished his daughter Maria, her husband Brian, his son John, and his grandchildren, Kylie, Emma, and Finn. He was especially devoted to his son John and took great pride in being there for him throughout his life. He celebrated his family’s accomplishments and loved being part of their lives.

Don will be remembered for his kindness, strength, wisdom, and generous spirit. He worked hard, loved deeply, and lived life fully. His greatest legacy is the family he loved so dearly and the memories he created with them. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who loved him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Friday, August 28, 2026 from 10 AM - 12 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So.
