Blue Hill Cemetery
Starts at 11:00 am (Eastern time)
Dorothy “Dolly” Vincentina (Schiavone) Fernald passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on May 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 99 years old.
Born in Newton, Massachusetts on June 9, 1927, Dorothy built a life centered around love, laughter, friendship, and family. She met the love of her life, Charles Fernald, and the two were married in October of 1947. Together they made their home in Weymouth, Massachusetts, where they raised their family before retiring to Harwich, Massachusetts in 1989.
Dorothy was a woman who embraced life fully and joyfully. She had an endless circle of friends and loved staying active through cards, games, bowling, tennis, dancing, and especially golf — her greatest passion. An avid golfer throughout most of her life, Dorothy continued playing well into her 90s, inspiring everyone around her with her energy and determination.
She also loved to travel and spent many happy months in warmer climates so she could continue enjoying the game she loved. Her children and grandchildren cherished time spent with her on the miniature golf course, playing Nickel Nickel and trying to beat her in online Scrabble for short term bragging rights.
Above all else, Dorothy treasured her family. She had a rare and beautiful gift for making each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild feel uniquely loved — as though they were “her favorite.” Her warmth, kindness, humor, and unwavering devotion created a legacy that will live on for generations.
Dorothy is survived by her loving children: Judith Appleton and her husband George; Charles Fernald Jr. and his wife Tuppy; Nancy Sheridan and her husband Jim; John Fernald and his wife Wannee; and Jean-Marie MacLeod and her husband Tim. She also leaves behind 17 cherished grandchildren and 25 beloved great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Dorothy’s family and friends will remember her for her vibrant spirit, her loving heart, and the countless memories she created with those fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather at McDonald Keohane Funeral home ( 809 Main St Weymouth) on Tuesday 6/2/2026 at 10:15 AM to go in procession to a Graveside service in the Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree at 11 AM.
