Dr. John Andrew McGuire, age 59, of Newport News, VA and prior Quincy resident, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully on June 21, 2026, while vacationing with his family in Provincetown, MA.
John started his exciting life on June 22, 1966 in Winthrop, MA, born to John Paul and Christine (Willis) McGuire. Growing up in Wollaston, John graduated from North Quincy High School, class of 1984.
After graduation, John received his Bachelor’s in Music and Vocal Performance from the University of New Hampshire, and also studied at The New England Conservatory of Music. Next for John was earning his Master’s in Music (MM) and Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in Vocal Performance with a concentration in Opera Directing from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. McGuire joined the Music Faculty of Christopher Newport University in August 2016. Moreover, John performed outstandingly all over the world with several opera companies and orchestras. Some of his leading operatic roles include Tamino, The Magic Flute, Idomeneo, Idomeneo, Sultan, Zaide, Pedrillo, The Abduction from the Seraglio, Lippo, Street Scene, Martin, The Tender Land, Ferrando, Cosi fan tutte, Don José, Carmen, and Rodolfo, La bohème. Dr. McGuire has directed countless opera scenes and full productions for universities and opera companies. Notably, John directed the debut – the first time on an opera stage anywhere – of The Trial of God by the late Elie Wiesel. Additionally, John was a faculty member of the Franco American Vocal Academy and directed such works as The Marriage of Figaro in France and Austria.
John’s exuberance for life was beyond measure. John traversed the globe meeting new friends wherever his adventures led. Visiting friends, traveling with family, and performing worldwide were his treasures.
Predeceased by his parents, John and Christine, John was the loving brother to Dennis McGuire of Fort Collins, CO, Colleen Duran and her husband Paul of Woburn, MA, and Dr. Kathleen McGuire of Arlington, VA.
