John T. Ostheimer Jr., MD, a devoted husband father and grandfather, with his wife, Joan at his side, passed away peacefully, on February 3, 2026 at the Life Care Center Of The South Shore in Scituate Massachusetts.

John was born in Flushing New York on June 6, 1935 to parents John T Ostheimer Sr. and Dorothy Peideman Ostheimer. John was the oldest of five children.

John’s formative years were in Stamford, Connecticut, where John attended St. Luke’s School (New Canaan, CT) graduating in 1953. John continued his education, graduating from Amherst College in 1957 and then Tufts medical school in 1961. John completed his internship in primary care at Boston City Hospital, and his residency in Radiology at Tufts Medical School. At that time, radiology was a new and growing field of medicine, and Dr. Alice Ettinger, a Tufts professor, was a prominent and respected radiologist, and had a huge influence on John’s decision to pursue that field.

John Married Joan Worthington Noble of Stamford, Connecticut on December 23, 1958 and soon they became a family, with John T. Ostheimer III (Ted) born in 1959, and David in 1961.

In July of 1965, John enlisted in the United States Army Medical Corps with the rank of Captain. John and his young family moved to Frankfurt, Germany where John served at the 97th General Hospital as a radiologist, until August of 1968. While practicing, John continued to grow, learn, discover, and teach. One of John’s greatest contributions, while stationed in Germany, was introducing and teaching to the hospital staff, the newest radiological diagnostic technology: Computed tomography (CT), or CAT scan imaging.

Following his discharge from the US Army, the family returned to the US. John practiced radiology at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence RI for almost a year before he moved to Cardinal Cushing General Hospital (later named Good Samaritan Medical Center) in Brockton, MA. At Cardinal Cushing General Hospital, John was a highly respected radiologist and teacher of radiology to the staff, other physicians, and those new to the field. With John’s move to Cardinal Cushing, the family packed up again and moved to Hingham, Massachusetts, where John and Joan have lived since 1969. John continued practicing radiology and diagnostic imaging at Good Samaritan until the age of 76.

The family liked to travel near and far: trips to the Ostheimer Family ski house in Bondville, Vermont, John’s and Joan’s summer cabin on Maine’s Kezar Lake, and later, their cabin on Moosehead Lake (as Kezar Lake had become “too crowded”). As lifelong adventurers, John and Joan continued to travel, making trips back to Germany, as well as to Ireland, Alaska, Hawaii, and California to see their grandchildren, Matthew and Alessandra.

John was not one who could be described in one word, but one word has been mentioned frequently, and that is “teacher”. John loved to share what he knew, regardless of what it was. He taught his sons how to ski and swim, he helped build a gasoline powered go-cart for his boys and their neighborhood friends, he built several boats with family members, and so much more. John instilled his passion for learning in all that he met. John started the medical technician program at Massasoit Community College, and he was an Adjunct Professor of Radiology at Tufts medical school for decades.

John was passionate about so many things. John loved music, and learned to play guitar in his mid thirties. John and Joan were long time patrons of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. John also loved to fly his airplane. He had a Cessna 152, and an Aerospatiale Ralleye aerobatics plane. John loved his pets and had pets throughout his life, but Jake, Jenny, Wrangler, and Sophie were his nearest and dearest.

Where others seem to know a lot about a little, John knew a lot about everything, and could explain it all, leaving those who knew him in awe.

John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan, their son, Ted, of Weymouth, MA, son David, of Petaluma, CA, grandson Matthew, and fiancée Mikaela Cole, of Jamaica Plain, MA, granddaughter Alessandra, of Petaluma, CA, sister, Diane Jumper, and husband, Tim, of Hingham, MA, Kurt Ostheimer, and wife Sue, of Stamford, CT, Candy Treratola, and husband Dennis of Amherst, MA, and Greg Ostheimer, and wife Catherine, of Stamford, CT, cousin Carol Ferraro, and husband Bob, of Fairfield, CT, as well as many nieces and nephews.
