Burley, Edward C. of Plymouth, formerly of Braintree, passed away on November 10, 2023. He was 81.
Born in Boston in 1942, he was the son of the late Charles and Ann (Monticonne) Burley.
A graduate of Sacred Heart High School and Stonehill College, Ed combined a life-long love of literature, poetry and the English language with a passion for competitive athletics. For 35 years, he was a teacher at Boston English. From 1968 to 1983, he coached English High basketball, guiding legendary teams to the Division 1 State Championship in 1970, 1974 and 1975. He is a Hall of Fame member of the Massachusetts Coaches Association and the Boston English Athletics Association.
Affectionately known as “Mr. Burley” to the thousands of students he taught and “Mr. B” to the hundreds of players he coached, Ed made a profound difference in many lives with his humanity, idealism and towering presence.
Loving partner of 32 years to Millie Murphy of Plymouth. Former husband to Marcia Burley of Boston. Cherished father of Edward Burley of Boston. Grandfather of Farah Burley. Beloved brother to Kevin Burley, Gail Burley, Rosemary Noble, and the late Charles Burley.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Sunday 2-5 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Funeral service will be celebrated on at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Edward may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation, NY: 1359 Broadway, Ste 1509, New York, NY 10018.
