Eleanor June (Lawrence) Atherton of Hingham, formerly of Hull, died on Friday Oct. 9, 2026.
Daughter of Lillian Elizabeth (Hoetger) Lawrence and Raymond Walter Lawrence, born June 12, 1933, in Kingston, N.Y.; and recently of Linden Ponds Retirement Community of Hingham, MA.
Graduate of Kingston N.Y. High School, 1951; and Union University (Albany, N.Y.) School of Nursing, 1954.
Married Roger Morse Atherton, Jr., in Boston, MA; at Harvard University Chapel, March 28, 1959, after a 6 month engagement, in the style of the time.
Survived by her husband of over 68 years and sons Steven Dean of Worcester, MA; Brian Scott of Edmond, OK; and daughter Gail Ann of New York City, N.Y.; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her brother Donald Raymond of Kingston, N.Y. is deceased.
A kind soul whose senior yearbook memo was “A light heart lives long” enjoyed an engaging and fulfilling life from beginning to end. Starting in Boston and living in Dover, N.H.; Acton, MA; Ann Arbor, MI; Norman, OK; and Hingham, MA; in succession as her husband progressed through his career in corporate management, then university administration; and lastly in Hull, MA after his retirement; she was a wonderful cook, treasured companion, social dilettante, and accomplished quilter.
Her favorite activity in retirement was designing and producing beautiful and creative quilts, usually taking over six months to complete; each one a work-of-art in the truest sense, while her husband built model sailing ships. They enjoyed a vibrant social life in Hull for over 20 years; participating in local social, civic, and political activities and offering their home on the shore as a haven for their favorite friends, of which there were many.
She had recently served a tenure as President of the Cross Town Quilters Association of the South Shore, a social group she treasured for many years.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visitation on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026 from 12-1pm in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. followed by a Celebration of Life Service on Fridat at 1pm. in Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, Hingham.
