IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth Mary "Bette"
Duclos
April 6, 1943 – March 1, 2026
Elizabeth Mary “Bette” (Higgins) Duclos, died peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the Dwyer Home in Weymouth. She was 82.
Bette was born in Boston on April 6, 1943, and was the daughter of the late James A. and Mary E. (Malouf) Higgins. She was raised in Roxbury and was a proud graduate of St. Patrick’s High School. There she formed many lifelong friendships that she treasured deeply. Bette earned her associate’s degree from Quincy College in her 40’s, so she could make a life for, and support herself and her son, embracing education as a lifelong pursuit and instilling the same values in her son. Throughout her career as a commercial insurance professional Bette distinguished herself through dedication and excellence and continually furthered her knowledge, earning professional certificates over the years, always striving to grow and improve.
Bette believed in hard work, loyalty, honesty, and integrity. She stood up for others and was never afraid to fight for what was right. Strong and independent, she faced life head on, guided by her deep sense of justice and fairness. She was much loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Creativity was woven into the fabric of Bette’s life. As a child, she sculpted clay busts of friends and family, already revealing the gifted artist she would become. She was a talented sketch artist and found joy in drawing and capturing the beauty she saw around her. One of her most cherished pieces, titled “My Beautiful Garden,” depicted a simple fence with a Folgers Coffee can in front of it, holding a single small plant. This was a tender memory from her time living in San Diego.
Bette loved to read and could often be found with a book in hand or working intently on a puzzle. She had a deep appreciation for color and filled her surroundings with warmth and vibrancy. In her garage stood a fully equipped woodworking shop, a testament to her self-reliance and determination. She took pride in caring for her home herself. Sanding and refinishing floors, painting walls, staining wood, and tackling any project that needed attention. There was little she could not do.
She was also a wonderful cook, known for hearty soups, delicious meals, and unforgettable fudge. Every recipe she made was a success, except, by her own admission, the pork chops (affectionately called “shoe leather” by her son).
Above all else, Bette was an extraordinary and patient mother. She stood steadfastly by her son throughout her life, offering unconditional love, guidance, and strength. Through her example and support, she helped shape him into the good man he is today. Her devotion, wisdom, and quiet courage will live on in him always.
Bette’s life was one of resilience, creativity, loyalty, and love. She leaves behind a legacy of integrity and strength that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Bette was the beloved partner of Juanita “Nita” Mears of Weymouth, with whom she shared 20 loving years. She was the devoted mother of Donald R. Duclos Jr. of Providence, RI, and the late Tracy Duclos, who died in 1983. Bette was the loving sister of Peggy Christopherson and her husband George of Weymouth, James Higgins and his wife Christine of Tewksbury, the late Richard Higgins and his surviving wife Janice of Tewksbury, and Michael Higgins and his wife Patricia of Norton. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, from 9-11 AM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Route 18 opposite of South Shore Hospital).
Her funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 11 AM in McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, South Weymouth. Cremation will follow.
Bette will be interred privately in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Boston, at a later date.
