Evelyn Patricia Hayes, 96, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025, in Hyannis, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. A lifelong learner and dedicated public health professional, Evelyn's remarkable life spanned nearly a century of service, education, and community involvement. Born on April 3, 1929, in Brighton, a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts,
Evelyn was the daughter of Harry J. Hayes II and Hannah A. Sullivan. She graduated from Brighton High School before pursuing her passion for nursing and public health. Her academic journey led her to the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing and later to Boston College, where she earned a Master of Science in Nursing. She furthered her education with a Master of Science in Public Health from Brandeis University.
Evelyn devoted much of her professional life to the United States Public Health Service. Her career took her to diverse locations including the Panama Canal Zone and Anchorage, Alaska-places where she brought care and expertise to communities in need. In the later stages of her career, she transitioned into academia, teaching Public Health at various colleges across the United States until her retirement in Florida.
In the early 1990s, Evelyn relocated to Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Even in retirement, she remained deeply engaged with civic life. She served on both the Yarmouth Board of Health and the Planning Board, continuing her lifelong commitment to public service and community well-being.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents; her siblings Harry J. Hayes III, Anna M. Connor, Theresa J. Mason, and John F. Hayes; and her nephew Richard F. Mason. She is lovingly remembered by three nieces-Joan M. Hughes, Brooke E. McCarthy, and Lynn C. Tripp-and two nephews-Scott G. Hayes and Mark S. Hayes— as well as many close friends whose lives were enriched by her wisdom and warmth. As well as many grand nieces and newphews, she had many close friends, including her special friend Silvani (Silvie) who assisted her in her daily activities during the last three years of her life. Evelyn was also never without her most beloved canine companion, Peaches, who never left her side.
Evelyn led a full and robust life marked by compassion, intellect, and dedication to others. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who mourn her passing and inspiration to those who follow in her footsteps of service and care.
