Federico “Fred” Cafardo of Hanson, Massachusetts passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on March 8, 2026.
Fred was born in Miranda, Italy, on October 27, 1948, to the late Nicola and Adelina (Pizzi) Cafardo. In 1954, his family immigrated to the United States and settled in Hanson, where he was raised and spent much of his life.
Fred had a lifelong love of sports and music. Baseball was his greatest passion, though he also played football and basketball. One memorable summer, he hit 14 home runs while wearing his lucky socks—hidden from his mother—earning 14 banana splits from the local ice cream shop. He continued to follow the Boston Red Sox throughout his life, attending games, the World Series, and Spring Training.
He devoted 35 years to teaching at Hanson Middle School, retiring in 2007. Teaching was his true calling. He taught Reading, Language Arts, and History with humor, music, and stories, often breaking into song in the classroom. Fred loved sharing his passions for baseball and travel with students, inspiring generations along the way. After retiring, he worked at L.L. Bean in Mansfield until 2019.
Fred met the love of his life, Corinne, on a blind date at Friday’s restaurant in Hanover in 1985. They shared nearly 39 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures. Together, they took great joy in raising their son, Zachary. Fred especially loved traveling, choosing a different country each summer, and one of his most cherished trips was when he brought his family to Italy to tour the country and visit his parents’ village.
Fred had a special affection for children of all ages, including his students, nieces, and nephews, and was known for his patience, kindness, and encouragement. His quick wit, one-liners, and infectious positivity left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Fred was the beloved brother of the late Nicholas Cafardo. He is survived by his devoted wife, Corinne, and his son, Zachary, along with his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephew.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Funeral service will be celebrated immediately following the visiting hours at 12:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred’s memory to the Hanson Public Library Foundation, 132 Maquan Street, Hanson, MA 02341.
Fred will be remembered for his humor, kindness, and the lasting joy he brought to his family, friends, and students.
