Fern Mariann (Fortier) Darling, 74, of Whitman, Massachusetts, died January 7, 2026, in Boston, with her children by her side.
Born in Rockville, Connecticut, Fern graduated from Rockville High School in 1969 and went on to the University of Connecticut, where she earned her degree in physical therapy in 1973.
Fern spent nearly 40 years as a physical therapist, working in skilled nursing, long-term care, and in-home settings. She especially loved her years as Director of Rehabilitation at Goddard Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Stoughton. Servant-hearted to her core, she was a perfect match for her profession.
Fern later made her home in Abington, Massachusetts, where she raised her three children and built a life centered on family. She was an extraordinary mother—devoted, warm, fun, and loving, with a steady presence her children relied on. She led by example, teaching independence, a strong work ethic, and the importance of doing the right thing, even when it was hard. She also believed that the only way out is through.
In her later years, Fern adored being “Grammie” to her five grandchildren and kept busy with new projects she taught herself along the way. She made jewelry, ran a successful online thrift store, nurtured sourdough starter, and refurbished old furniture. She even took a part-time job at one of her favorite places: Home Depot. She spent her summers hands-in-the-dirt tending a vegetable garden she was so proud of. When she wanted a reset, she took day trips to Plymouth for salt air, seafood, and a sunset.
Fern is survived by her children, Jason L. Darling (and his wife, Katelyn), Lindsay B. Darling, and Mark A. Darling (and his wife, Alicia); and her grandchildren, Liliana, Dylan, Paige, Ellis, and Sam. She also leaves behind many dear friends, including her lifelong friend and matron of honor, Jean Taylor. Fern was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy (Luetjen) Green and Robert W. Green; her brother, Alan E. Fortier; and her former husband, Donald L. Darling.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Fern’s life and say farewell during visiting hours on Saturday, February 7, from 12:00–2:00 PM, followed by a service with Rev. Dr. Kristy Coburn at 2:00 PM at McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, South Weymouth, MA.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Fern, a two-time breast cancer survivor who kept showing up and refused to quit.
