Garrett F. McNamara of Quincy passed on December 18, 2025. Loving son to Maryjane (Briggette) McNamara and the late James McNamara (BPD). He is the beloved brother of James (Nancy) of Morrisville, NC, Stephen (Jeanie) of Dorchester and Mathew (Ann), Seana, and Patricia all of Quincy, and James McKinney of Pennsylvania. Cherished uncle to James, Kiara, Alana, Liam and Alexander. He will also be lovingly remembered by his aunts, uncles, many cousins and a group of long-time friends.
Gary was born in Boston and grew up in a large family in the Montclair section of Quincy. His childhood was filled with family gatherings including his grandparents, uncles, aunts and many cousins. He and his siblings spent hours outside and all over Montclair with neighborhood friends and family. A favorite destination was their own backyard, playing basketball on their homemade basketball court or swimming in their pool. He had fond memories playing for the Apache’s, Quincy Rec, and Local 1139 Babe Ruth with his brothers.
He graduated from North Quincy High School in 1986 and played full back on the football team. Long after he graduated, he continued to be a proud Red Raider fan.
He served honorably in the US Air Force for 10 years. He was stationed at bases across the United States and spent most of his time at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. When he finished his service from the Air Force, Gary moved back to Quincy. He had a long career at MIT Health as an Eye Technician and retired earlier this year.
Gary was incredibly proud of his nieces and nephews and was their biggest fan supporting all their activities in school, sports, and work. He was always up for a story about one of their achievements. He enjoyed family card games. He was a big Boston sports fan following the Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox. He was also an encyclopedia when it came to the Celtics. He enjoyed taking annual beach trips to Fort Walton Beach. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, quick wit, and calm demeanor. His siblings will remember him as being one of the nicest guys they ever knew.
