George G. Doherty

Doherty, George G., of Weymouth, passed away surrounded by his loving family after a quick and courageous battle with cancer on November 24, 2025. He was 64.

A proud graduate of Archie's class of 1978, George was such a math wiz that numbers bowed down to his prowess, sparing him the need to ever attend another math class. His academic journey didn't end there, as he went on to earn his stripes in nursing from Quincy College, a field where his innate caring nature could shine.

George's career was as varied as his interests. He began as a security guard at Quincy Hospital, where he was likely the friendliest sentinel you'd ever meet. Not one to stay put, he climbed the ranks to become a tech and then a nurse, bringing smiles and solace to his patients. It was there that he met his beloved Mary, with whom he shared 27 wonderful years. After leaving Quincy, he took his talents to Cambridge Hospital, where he continued to spread his unique blend of care and comedy.

The ninth of ten siblings, George's early life was a masterclass in sharing, caring, and the occasional wedgie. His love for the great outdoors was kindled on family camping trips, where he learned that the best way to sleep under the stars was with a sense of humor and a sturdy tent. A Boy Scout at heart, George's pinewood derby cars were as legendary as his ability to light a campfire with a single match and a well-timed joke.

From a young age, George's heart had room for all creatures great and small, a trait that made him the Dr. Dolittle of his neighborhood. His love for animals was matched only by his passion for hockey, a sport that combined his love for action with his penchant for cold rooms—something he appreciated even more after spending four years in the Air Force stationed in Alaska.

George's zest for life was evident in his love for driving and shopping, hobbies that allowed him to explore the highways and byways with the same enthusiasm he explored life. His trips to New Hampshire with “The Trio” were legendary. If you mentioned to Grampy you liked something he would lovingly bring 10,000 of those things without fail.

A history buff, he could regale you with tales of yore, often with a twist that left you wondering if he'd added his own comedic flair to the annals of time.

A foodie at heart, George never missed an opportunity to indulge in the culinary delights of the world, preferably in the company of his beloved Mary. Together, they gossiped navigated the restaurant scene with the gusto of two gourmands on a mission to taste it all (except for the “Italian Garden” she loved it, he hated it).

But let's talk sports. George's devotion to the Red Sox was the stuff of legend. His superstition was such that every time the Sox won, he'd celebrate by getting a new golden retriever, leading to a house that was less of a home and more of a very furry, very happy victory parade.

George was loving, funny, and friendly—not just in a 'nice guy' way, but in a 'life of the party' way. His laughter was infectious, his spirit was indomitable, and his legacy is one of joy, compassion, and a little bit of mischief. George Doherty may have left the building, but his stories, his laughter, and his love for life will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. Play ball, George, and may the fields of the great beyond be as green as Fenway Park.
