Gil "Fico" Alonso, age 89, residing in Quincy, Massachusetts, passed away on Thursday May 21, 2026 in Boston after complications from an illness. 

Gil was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, whose vibrant, generous and passionate zest for life will be missed by all whose lives he touched. 

Gil was born on September 1, 1936 in Cienfuegos, Cuba into a large nurturing family and had a very happy childhood. He arrived in the United States in August 1970 with a small suitcase and a willingness to work hard for a new life. Prior to arriving in the US, he was required to work in an agricultural labor camp for "4 years, 7 months, 23 days" to gain his independence from Cuba. He met Addys (Urquiza) Alonso and they were married in 1971 and eventually settled into their own home in Quincy, MA. Gil worked for Ionics Corporation in Watertown for many years and retired due to health reasons. 

Gil's life was filled with hosting family and friends in his home in Quincy every Sunday. He always had his famous Cuban coffee ready for anyone arriving in his home. Gil lived a passionate life filled with gardening, cooking, music, singing and dancing. He loved his family dearly. He was a great neighbor who was the first to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Once you met Gil, you were his friend for life. Gil loved animals and had a special bond with dogs. He owned many throughout his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Addys Alonso; step-son, Richard Hernandez of Weymouth, MA; daughter-in-law, Anna Hernandez of Weymouth, MA; granddaughter Julia Hernandez Botelho and her husband Joshua Botelho of Dartmouth, MA; granddaughter, Melissa Hernandez of Weymouth, MA; son, David Alonso and his wife Larisa dela Grana of Florida; granddaughter, Nathalie Alonso of Florida; great granddaughter, Vilang Alonso of Florida, Uncle and many extended family members and friends. He is predeceased by his step-son, Henry Hernandez of Quincy, MA. Weymouth, MA; 

 Gil Alonso will forever live in the hearts of his family and all who knew him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited for visitation on Friday May 29, 2026 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Quincy, Ma. Services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday May 30, 2026 at 10 am followed by burial at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury.
