Harvey Mades of Newburyport, formerly of Georgetown, Massachusetts died peacefully on October 26, 2025, at the age of 93 surrounded by the love and gratitude of his family.
Harvey was born in 1932, to Dr. Meyer & Anne (Drucker) Mades of Revere, Mass.
A highly decorated army medic in Korea, Harvey was injured during combat, for which he received the Purple Heart Medal in 1953. He was also awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Combat Medic Badge. He was a fighter through and through and to be under his protection was to feel no fear.
In 1957, Harvey met the love of his life, Ruth, on a blind date and knew instantly he wanted to marry her. He wooed Ruth by driving her to her classes at Boston University. The two were married that same year and moved to Georgetown, where Harvey had found work as a teacher in the local high school. He would stay on at GHS for 35 years, many of which he served as the Chair of the Science Department. All three of his children had their Dad as their Biology teacher which was fortunate because he was a great teacher. Years after his retirement, Harvey would still run into students who thanked him for helping to inspire their own pursuits.
Harvey loved his country and the community in Georgetown. His life was full of good dogs, and beautiful Classical music. He never willingly missed a Red Sox game. His yard was always immaculate, and roses would flourish under his care. He loved boating on the Atlantic with his family and especially, Bluefish season. And oh, did he love his children. But all of it paled next to spending time with Ruth, who passed in December of last year. And while it’s hard to imagine a world without them, it’s a tremendous comfort to know that Harvey and Ruth are at peace and together once again.
Harvey was also predeceased by his mother and father; his brothers Michael M. “Mickey” Mades and Dr. Joel Mades. He is survived by his son David Mades and his wife, Linda; his son Daniel Mades and his wife, Karen; by his daughter, Debbie Mellor and her husband, Art. Harvey also leaves behind a nephew, Dean Mades and his wife Kelsey, as well as three grandchildren: Alyssa Sexton and her husband, Michael; Michael D. Mades; and Douglas Mades and his wife Revati. Harvey was the great grandfather to Finn & Rory Sexton.
A private graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park in Sharon, Massachusetts.
