Janet Hickey (Rich), born Janet Elaine in 1933 in Waltham, MA, the daughter of George and Louella Rich of North Quincy, passed away peacefully on April 28, surrounded by the love of her family.
A proud graduate of North Quincy High School, Class of 1951, Janet married the love of her life, Walter, in 1953. Together they built a life in Squantum, where she cherished looking out at "her ocean" each day for more than 70 years, remaining there until late 2025. She and Walter shared a love of travel, exploring Europe, Mexico, and much of the United States together.
Janet had a lifelong passion for geography. She took great pride in mentoring her dear friend Matthew-whom she thought of as a grandson— as a GeoBee coach, and later delighted in hearing about his travels around the world.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Walter J. Hickey Associates Engineering Co. and later for Swartz Clothing Company. Janet was also a devoted and active member of Star of the Sea Church in Squantum.
Janet was predeceased by her beloved husband of 41 years, Walter, and their son, Paul.
She is survived by her devoted son Brian; her daughter-in-law, and dear friend, Joanne; and the apples of her eye, her beloved granddaughters, Jamie and Sarah. As "Grammie at the Ocean House", she inspired laughter, curiosity, a love of travel, and a deep sense of family. Janet also leaves behind several loved cousins in Canada.
Janet was blessed with two lifelong friends, Eileen and Carol, who remained by her side through prayer, conversation, and laughter until the very end.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 20 at 3:00 PM at Keohane Funeral Home, Hancock Street, Quincy. Burial will be private.
Donations in Janet's name can be made to Boston Children's Hospital.
