Janice Elinor
Snyder
July 27, 1936 – May 22, 2026
Janice (“Jan”) Elinor Snyder (née McLaughlin), 89, of Scituate, MA, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, MA.
Jan was born on July 27, 1936, at Arlington Hospital, to her father, James, and mother, Dorothy (“Dot,” née Shine) McLaughlin. She grew up in Weymouth and lived in Cohasset for a few years before spending 53 years living in Scituate near the ocean that she loved. She graduated from Weymouth High School and received a certificate from the Chandler School in Boston. She held various positions through her earlier years, including at Northrop Nortronics, Brady Enterprises, and Hingham High School, and she also oversaw numerous elections held in Scituate. However, she primarily focused on parenting and managing her family’s household responsibilities after giving birth to her son.
Jan loved nature and everything about the ocean and the beach — the more natural and wild the beach, the better. She enjoyed spending time on Cape Cod (Chatham was an especially favorite place). She loved to sail … really, to be on any kind of boat. She had quite an adventurous streak, riding at various times in biplanes, gliders (sailplanes), helicopters, and hot air balloons, and she even took a flying lesson or two. Motherhood was a particular source of joy for Jan. She never once stopped reminding her son how much she loved him. She taught him to read, to speak French, and the name of every bird, flower, and sea creature before he had even started school at 4 years old. Jan knew herself well, spoke honestly, and she lived her life passionately and authentically. She was truly one of a kind and is irreplaceable.
Jan is survived by her deeply dedicated husband of almost 59 years, John; her son, John, of Washington, DC; her brother, Alan McLaughlin of Bedford, MA (wife Alyce and children James, Leslie, and Allyson and their families); and her sister, Lois Lavan of greater Richmond, VA (husband Tom and children Molly, Thomas, and Patrick and their families). Her small family was close-knit and meant the world to her — she loved them all dearly. It was very much mutual, and they will keep her forever close in their hearts.
Private services for the family will be held at the McDonald-Keohane Funeral Home on Saturday May 30, 2026 in South Weymouth.
