Jean Marie
"Honka" Young
Dec 9, 1946 — Oct 5, 2026
Raynham, Massachusetts
Jean Marie “Honka” (McGarry) Young, of Raynham, died peacefully in her home on Monday, October 5, 2026. She was 79.
Jean was born in Boston on December 9, 1946, and was the daughter of the late Bernard D. and Frances T. (O’Reilly) McGarry. She was raised in Jamaica Plain and attended St. Thomas Aquinas.
She was devoted to her family and believed wholeheartedly that family came first. Her home was often filled with children, laughter, activity, and love. She was especially proud of her boys and treasured her grandchildren. When her children were working, Jean Marie was there to care for and watch over the grandchildren, happily becoming an important part of their everyday lives. Her family was her greatest joy and one of the things she was most proud of.
Jean Marie was a homemaker who took tremendous pride in making her home beautiful and welcoming. She also worked as a bank teller, but home was always her special place. She loved decorating her condo for every season and every holiday, and she did it with enthusiasm. Her home was always festive and filled with the things she loved. She took great pride in her decorating, and her personality could be seen in every room.
She especially loved an Americana style, with red, white, and blue throughout her home. She was patriotic and took pride in surrounding herself with those colors and symbols. Whether it was a holiday, a change of season, or simply another opportunity to decorate, Jean Marie was ready to celebrate.
Jean Marie had a love of music and enjoyed all kinds of songs. She had a particularly creative way of enjoying music, often making up her own lyrics and singing them in her own way. She even had a vocabulary all her own, creating words and expressions that became uniquely Jean Marie. Her family will remember those words, songs, and little quirks that made her unmistakably herself.
She also had a special fondness for owls, which could be found among the many things she enjoyed collecting and displaying. She loved trips to the Christmas Tree Shop and visits to Cracker Barrel. And, of course, Jean Marie had quite a sweet tooth. Cinnamon rolls with plenty of icing, fresh breads, pies, desserts, and candy were all favorites. Spice Drops were particularly beloved.
Above all, Jean Marie was a happy person. She enjoyed her life, enjoyed her family, and found joy in the little things. She was independent, spirited, funny, loving, and sometimes just a little bit spicy. Her greatest legacy will be the love she gave her family and the memories she created in the home she worked so hard to make beautiful. For those who knew and loved her.
Honka was the devoted mother of George D. Young and his partner Lisa Turenne of Bridgewater, William J. Young and his wife Susan of Alaska, and Robert J. Young and his wife Rebecca of Carver. She was the loving grandmother of Logan Young of Attleboro, Lillian Young of Carver, Jodi Young of Kansas, and Griffin Young of Carver. Honka was the dear sister of Geraldine and Marion McGarry, both of Weymouth, the late Daniel McGarry, and the late Maureen Genack. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Monday, October 12, 2026, from 5-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Route 18 opposite of South Shore Hospital).
