Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Jean Marie (Nightingale) Murphy of Quincy, and a former longtime resident of West Melbourne, FL, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on Tuesday, August 18th, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was 75.

She was born in Boston to Rita M. (Wood) and John V. Nightingale and raised in Dorchester. She graduated from Cardinal Cushing High School and went on to work for Masco for many years. She also worked as a toll collector in NH and when she moved to Florida, she worked in an administrative position at a hospital.

Jean’s life centered around her family and friends. She met her husband, Jerry Sr. in the 1980’s and they were married in 1987. In 2004 they moved to Florida together and settled in West Melbourne. There they made many friends and enjoyed their Friday nights at the club house celebrating and playing cornhole and enjoyed their Monday's with their Bowling league.

In her spare time, she enjoyed time by the water, whether it was at their pool, on the beach or in their boat. She often fondly remembered many camping trips with family and friends, going to the Zoo in Brevard, vacationing in Aruba and any time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchild.

Jean was feisty, witty and always brought the fun to any function. She was someone that always looked after others and made them feel safe, special, and cared for. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Beloved wife of 39 years to Jerry Murphy Sr. of Quincy and West Melbourne, FL. Loving mother to Shawn Murphy and his wife Jennifer of Wakefield, Gerald Murphy Jr. and his wife Denise of Houghs Neck, and Erin Murphy of Houghs Neck. Adoring grandmother to Kayla Mann of Houghs Neck, Abigail Lee and her husband Justin of Charlestown, Ashley Murphy and Shane Murphy both of Houghs Neck, and adoring great grandmother to Leo Starobin of Houghs Neck. Loving sister to Jack Nightingale of Cotuit, Paul Nightingale and his wife Joanne of FL, Susan Nightingale and Janet Nightingale, both of Cotuit. Also survived by her niece-goddaughter Lizabeth McAnney and her husband Corey, her great nephew Eaghan Loud, and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 12th, from 2-6 PM at the Quincy Yacht Club, 1310 Sea Street, Quincy, MA 02169.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jean’s name may be made to St. Judes Research Hospital. Please see www.Keohane.com for directions and online condolences.
