Jeffrey H. Star, retired Deputy Chief of the Quincy Fire Department, passed away suddenly on September 13, 2025. A proud firefighter, devoted husband, loving father and loyal friend
Born and raised in Quincy, Jeff graduated from Quincy High School, Class of 1967. Shortly after graduation, he answered a higher calling and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Jeff returned home to begin what would become a distinguished career in the Quincy Fire Department, joining in 1977.
Over the next 37 years, Jeff rose through the ranks with quiet strength and unshakable integrity, serving as Lieutenant, then Captain, and ultimately retiring as Deputy Chief in 2014. He was stationed at Engine 4, Engine 5, and spent most of his career at Headquarters, where he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and community alike. A lifelong learner, Jeff earned a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science from Salem State College, further deepening his commitment to public safety and leadership.
Jeff was a proud firefighter, wise, humble, fiercely competent, and endlessly reliable. He could fix anything, listen to anyone, and was always ready with calm advice or a helping hand. He was known for his intelligence, craftsmanship, and deep dedication to those he cared about.
Outside of his career, Jeff lived a rich and active life. He was an avid cyclist, taking part in events like the Maine Lighthouse Ride, and could often be found riding the Eastern Trail or the South Shore Rail Trail Network. He found peace in his garden, joy in carpentry, and adventure in travel. After retirement, he and his beloved wife spent cherished time exploring Europe and relaxing at their cottage in Maine.
Above all, Jeff was a devoted husband and father, the kind of man who led by example and loved unconditionally. He was a loyal friend, a family man, and a steady presence to all who knew him.
Beloved husband of 44 years to Paula Starr (Kostachuk). Cherished Father to Jeffrey H. Starr Jr. Brother to Jacquelyn Higgins, Michael Starr and the late Herbert Starr. Brother-in-law to Debra Hanley and Lynne Kostachuk. Jeffrey leaves behind many nieces, nephews and his grandog Luna.
