John Murray Brandt of Hingham, Massachusetts, formerly of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Irondequoit, New York, was born on March 18, 1938, to parents John Frederick Brandt and Kathryn Elizabeth Brandt of New York. He passed away peacefully, and in the company of family, on January 22, 2026, at the age of 87.
John graduated from Irondequoit High School in 1955, earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1961, and earned his LL.B. from Boston College Law School in 1966.
John was a patent and trademark attorney, a politician and civil servant, and previously an administrator of civilian and defense space programs. He was a member of the Massachusetts Bar, the United States Patent and Trademark Bar, and the Sigma Pi Sigma National Physics Honorary Society, and served as a trustee of the Hingham Symphony Orchestra.
John was very active in politics throughout his life. He was State Chairman of the Massachusetts Young Republicans from 1964–66; held various positions with the Massachusetts Republican Party and campaign organizations; was a candidate for Massachusetts State House in 1966; a candidate for Massachusetts State Senate in 1968; and was the eight-term elected member of the Hingham Sewer Commission.
John was a collector of antiquities and books, an avid lover of jazz and classical music, a cyclist, and a craftsman.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John Frederick Brandt and Kathryn Elizabeth Brandt, and by his sister, Karen Riggs.
He is survived by his sons, Ian Brandt and Kyle Brandt; his sister, Linda Connell (Chris); and his partner, Jean Montgomery, and her family, whom he embraced as his own: her daughter, Tania Kennedy (Justin F.X.), and their children, Angela and Robert; and her son, Michael Diatchenko (Keara), and their daughter, Ella. He is also survived by nephews, a great-nephew, and great-nieces.
John will be remembered for his sharp mind, independence, caring nature, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who shared in his life.
