John F. Kane

John F. Kane of Quincy died peacefully on August 27, 2025. Born in South Boston, on September 3, 1939, to Daniel and Marie (Butler) Kane, John had many fond memories of growing up in a large, close-knit family of Irish immigrants in South Boston. He graduated from Gate of Heaven High School in 1957. He served in the Army Reserves and was recognized for his exceptional dedication and leadership. John worked for the telephone company for many years. Following his retirement, he went on to work for FEMA. He traveled to places all over the country helping recovery efforts after natural disasters.

John was a gentle man in the truest sense of the word. He was devoted to his family and friends. His generosity and thoughtfulness made their lives better. John was attentive to the little things. He would join his mother and sister’s family for fish nights every Friday on 3rd Street and many Saturday evenings with Nana, Theresa and the kids visiting with many cups of tea with Florence Jameson and the girls. He took his nieces to Filene’s in Boston to buy them the finest dresses, shoes, and accessories for Christmas and Easter. At large family parties, he would welcome and talk to guests not familiar with such vibrant and lively celebrations. He paid special attention to his family’s pets, volunteering to walk dogs for hours.

John was generous to a fault with his many nieces and nephews. He passed his love of travel and of life’s luxuries on to them. John exposed them to the theater, arts, and travel. He opened the door to some of their most memorable adventures and they are forever grateful. He engrained the importance of thoughtful giving and supporting family throughout their lives.

John’s fondest memories were of trips that always included his large network of family and friends. Many joined him in his travels across Europe and to visit his father Dan’s birthplace in Ireland. He went often to Ireland to keep family connections strong with his aunts, uncles, and cousins still living there.

John was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Marie, his brother Daniel, and his sister-in-law Kathleen. John was the beloved brother of Thomas and his wife Susan of South Boston, Theresa of Quincy, and William and his wife Patricia of Wilmington. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him deeply. He was fortunate to have close friends that brought him comfort through his final days.

Family and close friends are invited to his funeral mass at St. Brigid’s Church, South Boston MA on September 6, 2025 at 10am.
