John Joseph Mulligan “Jay” of Quincy formerly of South Boston, Brockton, and Cobh, Ireland. Died June 22, 2024. Cherished and devoted son to Gerry Flaherty(the late Matthew). Deeply loved brother to Kathleen and Tim and his wife Tori. Adored uncle of Anna and Patrick. Treasured member of his extensive Irish family of uncles, aunts, and cousins. Devoted friend and colleague to an immense circle of remarkable people.
Jay was born in South Boston to Gerry and Jack, delivered by his papa Joe Clougherty. Jay’s childhood home was in Brockton where he enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, and his love of hockey began. He attended Brockton High School where he was captain of the hockey team and was awarded recognition for his art work. He continued to play collegiate hockey and develop his artistic skills earning a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Southeastern Massachusetts University.
Jay “Jaybo” led a life of service to others. He opened his heart and home to everyone. Whether it be mowing or shoveling for his neighbors or hosting a multitude of roommates through the years, Jay was always there for those he loved. This dedication was also true for his professional life. He worked for Abby Foster to deliver and set up oxygen and serve the medical needs of homebound patients. He served many perfect pints at various pubs from Ames Plow, the Irish Embassy, McGann’s and the Kimball Cafe. For the past 24 years he served to protect the patients and staff as an employee of the Police and Security Department at Massachusetts General Hospital where he has been recognized for his service especially through such events as the Boston Marathon bombing and Covid 19 pandemic.
Jay had a strong faith in God, loved spending time with his family and friends, watching the Patriots and Bruins, and attending the hockey games of family members as an avid fan and follower. He enjoyed all things Irish, especially music and art. He would play his Irish music and paint with a vibrant use of color to create landscapes, pub scenes, sports, and people. His art work has won awards and been on exhibit in galleries and admired among many people’s personal collections. Along with being an accomplished artist, Jay holds the honor of being the first winner of the “Win Your Own Pub in Ireland” contest sponsored by Guinness Beer. Jay moved to Ireland to operate his new pub, Connie Doolan’s, and embraced the Irish culture and welcomed many visitors.
Through all of Jay’s life experiences he developed many strong bonds of friendship along the way from his lifelong childhood friends, college friends, pub friends, and work friends. He represents everything a friend should be and has a collection of artifacts and pictures of their memories together.
Jay will be remembered for his strong character, clever comedy, and creativity as an artist. His talent will live on through the gift of his art. The legacy of his love has left a profound impact on us all and will live on within each of us and in our memories of a great and special man.
