Mr. John H. Pica Jr., of Hingham, formerly of Weymouth, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on March 17, 2026. He was 77.
Born and raised in Weymouth, John was the son of the late John H. Pica Sr. and Mary (Cavallo) Pica.
He was a 1967 graduate of Weymouth High School and an outstanding member of its football team. Described as “a player’s player” and a “quiet hero” by his teammates and coaches, John was a three-year starter for Weymouth High School, playing both offensive line and defensive linebacker.
He was co-captain of the 1966–67 team and earned several awards, among them: two-time Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic, 1966 captain of the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team, 1966 Herald American All-Scholastic, 1966 Massachusetts All-American Football Squad, the 1966 John F. Kennedy Award, and selection to the Harry Agganis All-Star game. He furthered his education at Butler Junior College in Kansas, where he scored the one and only touchdown of his career before graduating from Weber State in Utah.
John and his family owned and operated the Venetian Restaurant in Weymouth for 90 years before his retirement in November 2019. His generosity in the town of Weymouth never went unnoticed, and he loved helping in the community. John was always there to host the Weymouth High School football team's regular pre-game pasta dinners at the Venetian.
Family was at the heart of John’s life. He and his wife, Diane, loved hosting family gatherings and impromptu dinners, and he treasured his grandchildren and all members of his family. In his spare time, John enjoyed tending to his garden, golfing, and watching football.
Deeply rooted in their faith, John and Diane were devoted, lifelong members of Immaculate Conception Church in East Weymouth, and John was often seen on Sundays serving as an usher during Mass.
He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
John is survived by his beloved wife and childhood sweetheart, Diane M. (Lamparelli) Pica. They met at the ages of 13 and 14 and were happily united in marriage in June of 1968.
He was the loving father of Tina Cannon and her partner, Paul, of Lisbon Falls, ME; Tiffany Courtemarche of Lowell; and John H. Pica III and his wife, Karen, of Weymouth.
He was the brother of Annmarie Costello and her husband, Alan, of Weymouth, and Greg Pica and his wife, Julie, of Weymouth.
He was the brother-in-law of Terri Higgins and her husband, Patrick, of Franklin; Gina Keefe and her husband, John, of Avon; and Debbie Lamparelli and her late husband, Nick, of New Jersey.
John was the cherished grandfather of Aidan; Armani; Val and his fiancée, Sophia; Amanda and her husband, Ryan; Anthony; Isabel and her husband, Owen; and Dominic and his wife, Jordan.
He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Wednesday 3/25/2026 from 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital).
