LCDR John M. Pinto, Jr. (USN-Ret) of Hingham, 92, passed away peacefully in his home on August 22, 2025 surrounded by his family.
John was born on Cherry St. in Plymouth, eventually the family moved to Chilton St. by the waterfront. He is the eldest son of the late John M. Pinto Sr. from San Miguel, Portugal and Ida (Monteiro) Pinto of Lisbon, Portugal.
John attended Plymouth-Carver High School and worked on his father's fishing boat, the Liberty II. After high school, John joined the Navy, was eventually accepted to the Navy Prep School, and ultimately the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis where he graduated in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in biology.
He was a Navy pilot throughout the Vietnam War until he retired in 1977 and moved back to Plymouth, MA to help with is father's commercial fishing business. He also had a lobster boat, the WenDeeJon II, and was a commercial lobsterman until 1997. In addition to spending much of his life in the air and on the sea, he was also a woodworker and enjoyed needlepoint and knitting and was a member of the Elks, Lions and American Legion.
Beloved husband of Diane B. (Biederman) Pinto of Hingham for 67 years. They met at a Navy football game and were married 2 weeks after he graduated from the academy.
Loving father of John M. Pinto of North Easton and Wendy Hughes and her husband, Frank, of Bristol, Rhode Island.
Grandfather of Daniel Pinto and Sean Wagenbach.
Brother of Rosalie Dunn of Florida and the late Diane Clark, Wayne Pinto, and Dennis Pinto.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend John’s graveside service on Thursday September 11th at 1:15 PM at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New England Center for Homeless Veteran’s 17 Court Street, Boston, MA 02108.
