Leo J. Smith, Sr. of South Weymouth, passed away surrounded by his loving family on September 2, 2026. He was 91.
Born in Dorchester, the son of the late Henry and Rose (Kenney) Smith, Leo was raised in Dorchester before moving to Weymouth, where he raised his wonderful family. He was a proud graduate of Dorchester High School, Class of 1953. A gifted athlete, Leo excelled in all sports but especially football, basketball, and baseball, earning many awards along the way. His talent on the diamond led to him being drafted by the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Proud to be OFD (Originally From Dorchester), Leo and his group of high school friends met once a month for fellowship and stories, a tradition that continued from their school days up until recently. He enjoyed following his Boston sports teams and was among the very first season ticket holders of the Boston Patriots back in 1960.
The greatest joy in Leo's life was being a husband and father, but most especially, a Papa. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye, and he could always be found on a sideline watching them play sports or at a dance recital, camera in hand, taking all the photos in the world... "Papa of the Year" goes to Leo Smith. Last December, Leo welcomed his first great-grandchild, Maeve Arlene, capping off 91 beautiful years of his life.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Beloved husband of the late Arlene G. (MacDonald) Smith.
Loving father of Leo J. Smith, Jr. and his wife Brenda of Moultonborough, NH; Stephen Smith and his wife Kim of Weymouth; Brian Smith of Rockland; and Kathleen Fucile and her husband James of North Carolina.
Proud and cherished Papa to his grandchildren, whom he adored: Conor, Allison, Kaitlyn, Lyndsey, Amanda, Shane, Brendan, Aidan, and Stephanie. Great-grandfather of Maeve Arlene. Brother of the late Henry Smith, Paul Smith, Marie Abare, Dorothy Smith, and Ellen Pepi.
Also survived by many nieces and nephews and his former daughter-in-law, Kathy K. Smith of Hingham.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 4–7 PM at the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, South Weymouth, 809 Main Street (Rte 18, opposite South Shore Hospital).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the funeral home at 11:15 AM on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, prior to the Funeral Mass at Saint Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth, at 12 Noon. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery, Weymouth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Francis Xavier Church, 236 Pleasant Street, Weymouth, MA 02190.
