Liam Fitzgerald, age 68, of Weymouth, Massachusetts, passed away on June 16, 2026.

Liam is survived by his former wife, Mary Fitzgerald, his sons Matthew Fitzgerald and Brian Coghlan, and his brothers Richard and Ted Fitzgerald.

Born in Boston and raised in Jamaica Plain, Mr. Fitzgerald was the son of the late Edward and Teresa Fitzgerald. Liam spent his life close to the people, places, and institutions he loved most in his neighborhood. Among his fondest Boston memories were working on the Swan Boats in the Public Garden, serving Red Sox fans at the concession stands of Fenway Park, and spending time with friends at his favorite neighborhood gathering place, Costello’s Tavern.

A lifelong member of the Xaverian Brothers High School community in Westwood, Liam dedicated 37 years of service as a student, coach, athletic trainer, teacher, and guidance counselor before retiring in 2018. As a student, he excelled on the football field, where he was a three-year varsity starter and senior captain before graduating and continuing his education at Boston University.

Liam returned to Xaverian as a football coach and went on to serve as an athletic trainer and member of the Physical Education Department. After earning a master's degree in school counseling from UMass Boston, he became a guidance counselor and social studies teacher, where he positively impacted the lives of many students. Among his many accomplishments at Xaverian Brothers High School, his most cherished was presenting his son Matthew with his diploma (and a hug) on stage at his graduation in 2010.

A private service was held at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury on June 30, 2026. Family and friends are invited to remember Liam and celebrate his life in their own way, honoring the relationships, loyalty, and dedication that defined him throughout his life.
