Dr. Martin J. Dunn, a venerable luminary of Boston College High School and its esteemed Board of Trustees, departed this world on August 25, 2025, in Milton, Massachusetts, at the age of ninety. Born on April 23, 1935, in Quincy, Massachusetts, Dr. Dunn's life was a tapestry woven with the threads of service, commitment, and unwavering dedication to the Jesuit principles that guided his every endeavor.
A stalwart advocate for education and a champion for the marginalized, Dr. Dunn’s legacy is forever entwined with the very foundations of Boston College High School. Upon graduating from Boston College and Tufts Dental School, Dr. Dunn’s commitment extended beyond the boundaries of Boston, as he profoundly impacted lives through his work with the Por Christo organization. His dedication to providing top-tier oral and maxillofacial care for impoverished communities in Central and South America has earned him not only the admiration of his peers but also multiple honorary degrees, knighthood bestowed by the President of Ecuador, and recognition from Saint John Paul II himself. His humanitarian efforts often included lifesaving surgeries that underscored his legendary status as a "man for others.
Marty returned to his alma mater, not merely as an alumnus, but as a fervent believer in the transformative power of knowledge and compassion. His contributions to BC High were not only significant but iconic, serving as a beacon for future generations who would benefit from his relentless passion for service.
Throughout his tenure on the Board, Dr. Dunn played an instrumental role in pivotal decisions that would shape the future of the institution. His advocacy for the Arrupe Division epitomizes his foresight; recognizing the need to adapt to declining numbers among Catholic feeder schools, he urged the leadership to expand the school's offerings to include a middle school. This visionary insight culminated in the establishment of the Arrupe Division, which, since its inception in 2007, has welcomed countless young men into an enriching academic environment, nurturing their intellectual and moral growth. Moreover, his remarkable foresight in establishing a global education program reflected his understanding that true education transcends borders. He advocated for deeply immersive experiences for students, leading to the creation of the Hyde Center for Global Education, which has transformed the lives of countless individuals over the past decade. His role in forming the first-ever Jesuit Colloquium on Secondary Education further cemented his legacy; a gathering that united Jesuit institutions from around the world, fostering collaboration and understanding across nations and cultures.
Among those who remember Dr. Dunn fondly, Pat Landers '73, a former Board Chair, eloquently encapsulated his essence: “When I think of a ‘man for others,’ I think of Dr. Marty Dunn.” Such sentiments echo throughout the halls of BC High, a testament to a life dedicated to the betterment of others. In his passing, Dr. Dunn leaves behind a profound legacy of compassion, innovation, and unwavering dedication to education. He will be missed not only by the innumerable lives he touched but also by the institution he helped transform. He is predeceased by his wife Carol of 67 years, and their cherished daughters Tracy Dunn & Alexandra Dunn, who continue to carry forth the values Dr. Dunn embodied. Though he may no longer walk amongst us, his spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts and minds of those he inspired.
