Mary K. Barnes, beloved mother, nurse, friend, and devoted woman of faith, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2026, at the age of 86.

Mary was born on November 17, 1939, in Rosmuc, County Galway, Ireland, to the late Thomas and Kate Canavan. At just 17 years old, in 1957, Mary courageously came to the United States alone, beginning a new chapter of her life in a country far from home.

Mary was determined, hardworking, and proud of all that she accomplished. She put herself through nursing school, and nursing became one of the great passions of her life. She devoted 35 years to caring for others at a nursing home in Braintree, where she touched the lives of countless people and formed many close and lasting relationships with her coworkers and staff.

After coming to America, Mary put down roots first in Quincy and later in Weymouth, where she raised her two sons. Her family was the center of her life, and she was incredibly proud of her boys and all they accomplished. Mary was a devoted mother who was always there for her children, offering her love, support, kindness, and generosity.

Mary had many interests that brought her joy. She loved gardening, knitting, bowling, dining out, and spending time with her friends. She especially enjoyed getting together with friends, talking and laughing, and watching Jeopardy!. Mary was also an avid traveler and always treasured her trips back to Ireland, where she could reconnect with the place she would forever call home.

Mary was an exceptionally talented knitter, and to this day, many people proudly tell the story of owning one of Mary's beautiful hand-knit afghan blankets. Each one was made with love and care, much like everything Mary did for the people around her.

Faith and nursing were the foundation of who Mary was. She lived her life with compassion, kindness, and a generous heart. She was a caring woman who gave so much of herself to others, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and the many lives she touched along the way.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Kate Canavan, and her beloved husband, Joseph Barnes.

She leaves behind her two sons, Robert and Joseph , along with many siblings, nieces, nephews cousins, as well as many dear friends and loved ones who will miss her dearly.

Mary's life was a testament to courage, devotion, faith, and love. She came to America as a young woman with little more than determination and hope, built a life for herself and her family, cared for countless others, and left an enduring mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday 9/23/2026 at 11 AM  in Immaculate Conception Church, Weymouth. Burial in MA National Cemetery, Bourne.
