Mary J. Gibson (Cavanaugh), a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. Born and raised in Dorchester, she was the beloved daughter of the late Mary and William Cavanaugh, and was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Mary McDonald, who played a central role in her upbringing.
After marrying her beloved husband, the late Walter F. Gibson, Mary settled in Quincy, where together they built a life and raised their four children. Quincy became the place where Mary truly put down her roots, roots that grew into the large, loving family she was so proud of. She was always there to help care for and support the generations that followed.
Mary was a naturally caring, gentle, soft spoken woman with a big heart and a quiet, ladylike presence. Family was the center of her life and her greatest joy. She especially loved visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often sitting back with a smile, content simply watching them play and enjoy one another.
Holidays were very special to Mary, and no holiday was ever too small to celebrate. She loved decorating her home throughout the year, but Christmas was truly magical. Her home became a wonderland for her grandchildren, filled with warmth, decorations, and the memorable Christmas dinners she lovingly hosted. Mary was also known for never forgetting a birthday. No matter how busy life became, she always made sure to pick up the perfect card and gift. Those birthday phone calls became a treasured tradition that her family looked forward to each year.
She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her husband on cruises and vacations. In her spare time, she loved playing bingo, weekend getaways to the Irish Village, and visits to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. Mary also had a special sense of style and could always be seen wearing seasonal earrings and sunglasses that perfectly matched her outfit.
In her later years, Mary moved to 1000 Southern Artery, where she formed many wonderful friendships that quickly became some of the most meaningful relationships of her life. These friends truly became her besties. They shared lunches, played cards, and enjoyed the many activities together, bringing laughter, companionship, and fun back into her daily life.
Mary’s kindness, warmth, and devotion to her family will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Beloved wife to the late Walter F. Gibson. Loving mother to Mary Anne DeThomaso and her husband Daniel of Braintree, Stephen Gibson and his wife Mary of Quincy, Kathleen Gilmartin of Holbrook and Richard Gibson and his wife Katie of Cape Cod. Gilmartin III, Shannon Gilmartin and Ryan Gilmartin. “ Nana Nana” to her 6 great grandchildren Kali, Colin, Olivia, Kinsley, Lainey and Nikoletta. Mary is predeceased in life by her siblings William Cavanaugh, James Cavanaugh, Christine LeMay, Hughe Crawford and Judy Brown. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday 3/10/2026 from 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street (off Route 3A - Bicknell Square).
