Mary A. (Madden) McCarthy

Mary A. (Madden) McCarthy, of Brockton, formerly of Ireland, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, July 5, 2025. She was 91.

Mary was born in Galway, Ireland on November 16, 1933, the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary (Carter) Madden. She attended local schools before emigrating to the United States on July 12, 1952. She later continued her studies in Boston, Massachusetts. Education and perseverance were values she carried with her throughout her life

A resident of Brockton since 1967, Mary’s life was marked by selflessness, deep faith, and an unwavering devotion to those she held dear.

Mary was the devoted mother of her five wonderful children. She raised them with thoughtful guidance, grace and endless compassion, and taught them to do just the same. She shared a uniquely close bond with her late son, Jamie. Together, they lived in the same home for 47 years, inseparable companions in life’s journey. Jamie, who had Down syndrome, was the light of her life, and Mary dedicated herself fully to his care and happiness. They did everything together, and their love and loyalty to each other were a testament to the strength of family.

A devout Roman Catholic, Mary found comfort and strength in her faith, which guided her through life’s joys and sorrows. She was an avid knitter and seamstress, creating beautiful pieces with care and love. Nothing brought her more joy than time spent with her grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure. Whether chatting on the phone or enjoying a visit over Irish bread and a good cup of tea, Mary cherished every moment with her family and friends.

Her warmth, kindness, and quiet strength touched everyone who knew her. Mary leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and devotion that will never be forgotten.

Mary was the beloved wife of the late Jeremiah McCarthy, who died in 1978. Devoted mother of Sheila A. MacPherson and her husband James of Braintree, Maureen F. McCarthy and her husband Bubba Ayisumo of Abington, Trish M. McCarthy and her husband Brian of Winchester, the late Timothy G. McCarthy, and the late Jamie M. McCarthy. Loving grandmother of Jade Ayisumo of Abington, Dr. Sean MacPherson and Matthew MacPherson of Braintree, and Caroline, Dorothy, and Jeremiah McCarthy of Winchester. Dear sister of Michael Madden and his late wife Dolly of Melrose, Kathleen Pare and her husband Raymond of Brockton, the late John Madden, and the late James Madden. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
