Mary Ellen Monteith, a longtime resident of Quincy, passed away on Sunday, August 16th after a long, hard fought battle with cancer. She was 79.
She was born in Dorchester to Margaret (Waters) and John Cronin. She grew up in Dorchester and graduated from Cathedral High School. While in high school, she began working at New England Telephone Company where mutual friends introduced her to William “Bill” Monteith and the two made an instant connection. They were married in 1970 and had two children. In 1974 they moved from South Boston to Quincy, where they would call home for over 50 years.
After some time away to raise her children, Mary Ellen returned to the telephone company as a Manager of 411. Mary Ellen’s distinguished career later ended when she retired in 2009 after over 40 years of service. During her time at the phone company, she made many connections and long-lasting friendships.
Mary Ellen’s family was her greatest joy, and she was especially devoted to her grandchildren. Mary Ellen loved being there for all of their milestones and could be found in the stands at their sporting events, in the audience at school concerts, and proudly supporting them in everything they did. Mary Ellen never wanted to miss a moment. She celebrated their accomplishments as though they were her own and made sure each of her grandchildren knew just how proud she was of them. Being their “Nannie” was one of the greatest joys of her life.
Mary Ellen also loved spending time with her family and making memories together. Family vacations were some of her favorite times, whether it was a trip to Disney World, a cruise to Bermuda, or a getaway to Las Vegas. She loved the excitement of the casinos and always enjoyed trying her luck at the slots. Above all, she loved having her family together for dinners at her house and treasured all the memories made over the years.
Beloved wife of 55 years to William “Bill” Monteith of Quincy. Devoted mother to Bill Monteith QPD and his wife Aimee of Walpole and Dianne Murphy and her husband Chris of Walpole. Adoring grandmother to Matt, Cailyn, Jack and Maeve. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Predeceased by her siblings, Joan McMahon and Phyllis Lydon.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, August 26, at St. Ann’s Church, 757 Hancock St., Quincy. Burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary Ellen’s name may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Please see www.Keohane.com for directions and online condolences.
