Maureen Carroll Kearney passed away at home surrounded by her family, friends, and love after a short battle with cancer on Monday, April 13, 2026. She was 74.
She was born at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton, MA to Eleanor (Carroll) and Gerald Kearney, who raised her in Bethel, CT along with her five siblings Susan, Kevin, Michael, and Christopher. Maureen attended Immaculate High School in Danbury, CT and throughout her life often relied on her Catholic faith. She spent many hours enjoying the quiet escape of the Bethel Public Library. She earned her bachelor's degree from Stonehill College and went on to start helping people as a social worker, Head Start teacher, and regulator at the Commonwealth of MA's Office for Children. Maureen always knew how to talk to kids.
While working there in her late twenties, she met Philip Baimas in the kitchen of a colleague's home while they were both attending a conference. Maureen and Phil shared 47 years together that included a son, friends and family, and a loving and meaningful life.
Maureen bet on herself and cashed out her retirement funds to go back to school at 35, earning her master's in library science. It paid off with a rewarding career as a law librarian at several prestigious firms. Maureen's innate ability to find anything and her knowledge of what a library could be led her to a work life she truly enjoyed.
Maureen said she took care of herself by taking care of others. Being there for people, like her parents aging in place in Bethel, CT, her friend and elderly neighbor, and her mother-in-law, was what she always did. She believed in good works, or as she said, "putting your money where your mouth is," and was a regular volunteer, most recently at Meals on Wheels in Weymouth, where she made many friends.
She was a voracious reader who frequented her favorite libraries, sought out local ones wherever she traveled, and reminded everyone there's nothing like a good book. She enjoyed the quiet life, with time spent gardening at home and visits to the woods, ponds, and ocean around her. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Beloved wife of 40 years to Philip Baimas of Hingham. Wholehearted mother to John Gerald Baimas and his spouse Meag Harty of Brunswick, ME. Loving sibling to Susan Olsen and her husband John of NY, and Christopher Kearney and his wife Pam of VA. Sister-in-law to Carol Baimas and her husband Anthony George, Sharon Kearney, and Mary Jane Kearney. Godmother to Lianna, and affectionate aunt to her nieces and nephews Maria, Nicole, Brittany, Sean, John, David, Patrick, and Brian. She also celebrated the joyous arrival of grandnieces and grandnephews. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Eleanor (Carroll) and Gerald Kearney, as well as her brothers Kevin and Michael Kearney.
Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Sunday, April 19th, from 3-6 PM at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), Hingham. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Albert the Great Church, Weymouth, at 10 AM on Monday, April 20th. Cremation will follow, with interment at Our Lady of Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Maureen's memory to Croí Health, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061, in recognition of the exceptional care and service given to Maureen.
