Michael William Fontana, of New York, NY, formerly of Boston, MA, passed away suddenly at his home. He was 49.
He was born in Boston to Sheila (Kirwan) and William T. Fontana and raised in South Boston. He graduated from the Don Bosco High School and moved into the South End on his own. He was a man of many talents, but his true passion was helping people. He was able to channel this energy and passion into being a social worker with Fenway Community Health Center.
Michael spent the last decade of his life in New York City, a place that matched his energy, creativity, and love for people. He truly embraced the spirit of the city, forming deep friendships and building a community that stretched across neighborhoods and far beyond. Michael had a gift for conversation, he was a natural talker, deeply opinionated, passionate, and thoughtful. Beneath his strong will was a sensitive heart. He cared deeply for those in need and was often a protector to others, standing up for friends and strangers alike. His charisma drew people in, and it seemed he could make a friend anywhere he went.
In his spare time, Michael pursued the arts with enthusiasm and pride. He performed in Off-Broadway productions and had a lifelong love for theatre, proudly considering himself an artist. He was also a talented writer who used words to express his vivid perspective on the world. Michael loved helping people and was known for showing up when someone needed support or encouragement. Above all, he loved his family dearly, especially the time he spent with his cousins. He also had a special affection for Halloween, a holiday that perfectly matched his creativity and spirit. Michael will be remembered for his warmth, his voice, his passion for life, and the many lives he touched through friendship, kindness, and art.
Cherished son to Sheila (Kirwan) and William T. Fontana of Quincy. Loving brother to Matthew Fontana of Los Angeles, CA. Also survived by many cousins, aunts, uncles, extended family and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visitation on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 10-11:30 AM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. Funeral service will be celebrated immediately following the visitation at 11:30 AM in the Keohane Funeral Home, Quincy. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Boston.
