Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Carey, Nelma E. (Wessa) of East Dennis, originally of Brockton, passed away August 13, 2026 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Brockton she was the daughter of the late Alfred J. Wessa and Elizabeth (Maguire) Wessa. Nelma was the beloved wife of the late John “Jack” Carey. Cherished mother of Janel Donlan and her husband Paul of Hingham, Susan Gannon and and her husband Paul of Hingham, and the late Carol Carey. Devoted “Ma” and “Grammy” of Caroline (Gannon) Cole and her husband Nicholas, Jacqueline Gannon, and Mark Donlan. Loving sister of the late Robert Wessa. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Doris Schwab, nephew Cary Schwab, nieces Eleanor Wessa, Sandra Veidenheimer, and nephew Robert Wessa.

Nelma fondly remembered living in Brockton from when she was born until the early seventies. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School and worked at New England Telephone for 11 years before starting her family with her dear husband Jack, to whom she was married to for 60 years before his passing in 2020. They spent 15 wonderful winters together in Clearwater, FL, which she remembers as the best years of their lives. Nelma’s family was very important to her and she was a natural caretaker, whether it be her grandchildren, her husband, or her beloved late daughter Carol. Nelma loved spending time with her family at her home on Cape Cod. She could often be found in her pool lounging on her favorite float. She was a devout Catholic and prayed every day. Nelma was a gourmet cook who had a floor to ceiling bookshelf full of cook books and she had a love for sewing including making dresses for her daughters. Nelma volunteered for her children’s schools when they were younger. In her later years, she enjoyed doing her crossword puzzles daily. She was always thinking of others and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday 8/18/2026 from 8:30-9:30 AM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St.(off Central St.), HINGHAM followed by the Funeral Mass in Church of the Resurrection, Hingham at 10 AM. Burial in MA National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Nelma may be made to South Shore Health Foundation, 55 Fogg Rd. Weymouth, MA 02190.
