IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nicolaos
Athienites

Visitation
McDonald KeohaneFuneral Home - South
5:00 - 9:00 pm (Eastern time)
Nicolaos Athienites, M.D., age 65, of North Easton, died peacefully March 6, 2026 at South Shore Hospital in the comfort of loving family and friends. He was lovingly referred to by his friends, colleagues and patients as Dr. Nick.
He was born in Limassol, Cyprus on September 18, 1960 to his mother, Niki, and his late father, Byron Athienites, where he spent his childhood. Nick served for two years in the military for the National Service of Cyprus, before he received his medical degree from National University of Athens, where he graduated with honors in 1986. He immigrated to the United States in 1987 to continue his medical training.
To complete his internal medicine training, Dr. Nick served as intern, resident and chief medical resident at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where he was inspired to pursue a clinical nephrology fellowship at Tufts Medical Center.
After completing this training, he began his clinical research fellowship, in collaboration with Tufts Medical Center and the NIH on end-stage renal disease. He was an instructor and later assistant professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, prior to pursuing private practice.
Dr. Nick was a partner in Renal Medical Care, P.C. and served the South Shore and greater Boston community as a nephrologist for over 30 years. He had privileges at numerous hospitals and dialysis units, including South Shore Hospital, Brockton Hospital, Boston Medical Center - South (formerly Good Samaritan Hospital), Morton Hospital, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital and many more.
He believed in the importance of caring for underserved communities. For many years, he was the nephrologist for Brockton Neighborhood Health Center. In 2021, he was awarded the Clinician of the Year Award from the Massachusetts Medical Society.
Throughout his career, he helped train a variety of medical professionals. He believed in the importance of not only teaching clinical skills, but also the human side of medicine. When Dr. Nick saw his patients, he not only addressed their medical concerns, but cared to learn about their unique lives and experiences.
The family would like to express how much each and every patient meant to Dr. Nick. They would like to thank his patients for all their prayers and support throughout his illness.
He was known for his compassion, optimism, great life advice, and keen sense of humor. Dr. Nick took the time to get to know all the employees at the hospitals and dialysis units he worked at, not just the medical staff. He could be frequently found cracking jokes in the hallway, asking about people’s families and ordering takeout for all the staff. The family would like to thank all of the staff who have worked alongside Dr. Nick all of these years, especially his office staff and his fellow health care professionals at Renal Medical Care, P.C.
Dr. Nick enjoyed vacationing in the sun, sharing a good meal with friends and family, and chatting with colleagues in his second home, the doctor’s lounge at South Shore Hospital. His family would like to thank the Boston medical community for taking care of him when he contracted COVID in 2020. Their support and expertise made it possible for him to return to his family and the work he loved for 6 more years. His family would also like to thank the staff at South Shore hospital, especially the oncology/palliative care team on Emerson 6 and the medical hospitalists, who took care of him at the end of his life.
Nick was the loving husband of Jennifer (Herzog) Athienites for 21 years. The couple met at South Shore Hospital, where Jennifer worked as a registered nurse. He was the devoted father of Anastasia Athienites, who was the light of his life.
He was the beloved son of Niki Athienites and the late Byron Athienites and the brother of Natasa Kyprianou and her husband Andreas. He was the dear son-in-law of Wendy and Jay Herzog and the brother-in-law of Jon Herzog and his wife Alison.
He was the uncle of Nicoletta, Toby, Paige and Reid.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Thursday 3/19/2026 from 5-9 PM in theMcDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Fondation.
